As the name implies, this is a First Guide for beginners. It is an introduction to life cycles, nomenclature, the differences between spiders, true bugs, and insects; insect anatomy, and family groupings such as "ground beetles." Laying a foundation with such basic identification skills is vital to further entomology! It is the same with any field, in botany, it helps me to recognize the characteristics of Chenopodiaceae vs. Asteraceae, etc. Similarly, it is helpful to narrow down the field of suspects to dung beetles vs. ground beetles vs. click beetles. I grew up with this book but eventually purchased several other insect guides because there are just SO MANY insects out there. Personally, I find illustrations much more revealing than photographs. Great for kids and also adult beginners!
This book is a must have in our neighborhood. We live out in the woods of the Pacific Northwest where there are LOTS of bugs. I have 3 little boys that love to pick up and explore any and everything that crawls or flies. This book has lots of helpful information. The small size makes it easy to pack around when hiking.
The Peterson field guides have long been, IMHO, the gold standard for this type of publication. My 4-year-old great grandson has recently shown a great interest and curiosity about insects, and this First Guide is just the ticket for furthering his knowledge of these fascinating creatures. Who knows...he may be a budding entomologist!
Got this guide for my kids to use in the backyard and to learn a little about bugs. The setup is similar to other Peterson Field Guides, but this book is much smaller and has less insects in it than I thought it would. I hoped there there would be quite a few butterflies and moths as the kids are very interested in that topic. Apparently, you need to purchase the butterfly and moth book if that is what you are mainly interested in. Quite a few of the pictures were in black and white which was another disappointment compared to the bird guides I am used to. Overall, good information that isn't overwhelming for beginners, but a bit brief for my expectations.
Book has nice pictures, but omits Order and Family names. It's OK for kids or rank beginners, but not for entomologists or serious naturalists.
A lot of variety, but the pictures aren't quite as good as expected
We live in Upstate New York. I bought this several years ago as a companion to our homeschool science curriculum. I have three school aged kids, 4, 6, and 10. I often find them poring through this or using it outside to identify bugs they've found. It has been a good resource and has gotten plenty of use.
My daughter was turning 9 when I bought her this book, she loves it. She is always using it to look up bugs. we take it to the lake, hiking, and camping. I wish I would have bought it sooner. Great colorful pictures, descriptions, and easy to carry size.
