Although I think she did not tell Colt about the baby was a little to much to take but because she was young and naïve, I had to look past that. Well, wow. I loved this book so completely that I'm not even sure how to start reviewing it.First - we knew, didn't we, that Mark's book would be great. Second - Pen. Pen is everything I'd hoped for but also so much more. He is that perfect mix of arrogant and terribly fragile; he is fierce and beautiful and terrified. He's a wild and untamed thing. KJ Charles’ eloquent, poignant portrayal of Pen's gender-queer identity hit me like a literal blow to the chest. I know this is something a lot of people are working their way through right now. In my own case, people close to me have children who are struggling for acceptance as they are. Seeing this struggle put into writing - how completely assured Pen was of his identity, how wrong he felt when forced into a societal gender role - really brought it all home. I won’t lie, there were more than a few spots in this book where I had to break out the tissues.More than any other book in this series, the two leads had to work through some serious hurdles to get to their happy ending. For starters, Pen had some justifiable anger at Mark that they needed to get through. But aside from that - there were more external barriers, such as Pen’s status as a peer, his rather protective sister, and of course the villains out fouling things up for all our characters in this series.I would gladly stay in the Sins of the Cities world and spend more time with all these characters - there are so many more stories I’d like to hear. I hope KJ Charles indulges us with a novella or two at some point. In the meantime, An Unsuitable Heir was a satisfying conclusion to one of my absolute favorite series.**I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review of this book.**

This book was a fabulous conclusion to the over-arching mystery that took place over the course of this trilogy. However, it was almost a shame that this book had to take place at the end. IÂ think it can be read as a stand-alone, because what makes this book so important isn't the conclusion of the mystery, but the characters it focuses on.Hints about Pen and Mark were already revealed in the previous books, so this isn't spoiler territory. Mark is a disabled character, born with only one arm. Pen is genderqueer, with fluid body dysmorphia that forces him to adapt to either masculine or feminine traits as he feels most comfortable (the character uses male pronouns in the text). In addition, Mark is pretty obviously pansexual, and his desire for Pen never waivers regardless of how Pen feels that day or even moment to moment.The plot of this trilogy was fantastic, and all loose ends were tied up with satisfying conclusion. But it was the characters in all of these books who I came to care for the most. I'd especially love to see the further adventures of Braglewicz & Lazarus: Private Enquiry Agents, especially if it mean that I got more Nathaniel and Pen (and Greta!) out of the bargain.I highly recommend this series, especially as vacation reading when you want three novels back-to-back that are perfect for losing yourself in.

Well, I'm giving this 4 stars because it was it was an enjoyable read overall, but I was disappointed that the romance element was overshadowed by the mystery.Pen is an unusual character and the book necessarily contains quite a few conversations between Pen and Mark about Pen's gender fluidity, which makes Pen's aversion to an earldom believable. He is thrilled and relieved to find someone who accepts him completely, while Mark finds Pen physically gorgeous. My problem was that the period of time they spend getting to know each other and falling in love is skimmed over, largely occurring off the page, because there's so much suspense plot to fit in. Pen and Mark declare their love quickly (in page time, anyway) are forced apart by circumstances, and then reunited in the face of danger. By the end of the book I could see that Mark and Pen were sexually compatible but I didn't really know why else they loved each other. Their frequent declarations of love failed to convince me.Having said that, I did enjoy the suspense elements of the story, and the mystery has a satisfying conclusion. Justin Lazarus (my favourite character in the series) makes an appearance and outshines everyone else. One thing I noticed in this book that I was not aware of in the previous instalments was language that often felt too modern for the times. This dragged me out of the story on quite a few occasions.For anyone new to this series I would recommend just reading Book 2 if the romance is your primary interest, as it is by far the best of the three in that regard. Pen and Mark's relationship is just one element of an entertaining Victorian sensation tale, but it is not particularly moving or memorable in itself.

For 20 years, Margaret Russell has infused ELLE DECOR with a singular sense of sophistication while helping to preserve its mission to inspire those passionate about interiors with the best in decoration, architecture, and product design. In 2000, she was promoted to editor in chief of the magazine she helped found. ELLE DECOR is now the largest of 25 ELLE DECO editions published around the world.A graduate of Brown University, Russell began her career at Glamour. Her first book, Designing Women: Interiors by Leading Style Makers, was published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang in 2001, and So Chic: Glamorous Lives, Stylish Spaces was released by Filipacchi Publishing in 2007; she also appeared as a featured judge on both seasons of Bravo's Top Design. As an ardent fan of SO CHIC for its depiction of private lives and private homes, I ordered STYLE AND SUBSTANCE (kind of) expecting more of the same. The book is a delight to the senses and the interiors are elegantly charming and beautiful. I realize that the homes shown in it are ones previously featured in ELLE DECOR, but I was hoping for more of the details of the decorating and just a little more biographical info. These are not intended to be disparaging remarks; instead, they are personal opinion. It is an elegant book that I have now begun reading for the second time since I got it just about a month ago. Ms Russell has done a marvelous job in the editing. You'll once again be inspired, intrigued, and feel glee in peeking into the beautiful private worlds of some very elegant, charming people.

I own and review many interior design books, and this one by far is the most comprehensive I've seen in terms of different styles. Whether you're into modern, traditional, country, apartment-living, you'll be able to find something inspirational in this book. And if you haven't discovered your style yet, this book will serve as a wonderful guide. I've given copies of this book to friends who are about to buy properties or renovate their homes.

Because my design taste is more exotic and glamorous than many of the pictures in this book, I have given it 4 stars instead of 5. But, there are some WOW pages, as well--enough to make me happy to have purchased this book.

This really is the best of the best examples of style and substance. There are many different styles, but all of them have great flavor. There is a lot you can draw from in this book...or just enjoy it because it is FUN!

Great book! I love the magazine and now I have the hard bound of the best as seen from each issue.

Not worth the price. The cover is one of the few photos that's worthy of anything in the cover. A big disappointment.
