Novak writes clearly, persuasively, with a generous spirit, exhorting believers and unbelievers to communicate better with each other, to respect each other, to learn from each other. The book was published in 2008, so gathering from the dust and drama to be viewed on the internet every day, precious few people have taken this wisdom to heart. He makes a very strong case for the humility that both "sides" should have, and generally comes across as fair and sincere. He manages to paint a very grim view of secularism / atheism / agnosticism and the limits and future possibilities of these worldviews. I am not convinced that he always states his opponent's position in its best possible version, but there is no apparent sense of malice or strawman building in evidence. If you believe, as I do, that the debate about faith and atheism / secularism is a very important one, one with far-reaching implications, this book will probably expand and enrich your views on some aspects of the debate, regardless of the "team" you play on. An important read, highly recommended.

I got the audio version and listened to it in my car while commuting back and forth to work. I had to really stay focused to listen. The author reminds me of a beloved, grandfather, who sometimes rambles. At times he is very enduring and thought provoking; at other times slightly boring... All in all, he has some great insight, and a good handle on history, which I find interesting. In places, I think an atheist may be offended, if they are not open to another point of view, but mostly, his dialog is well thought out and deep. He has lived in doubt and darkness, and survived. It is a LONG book, so if you take it on, be prepared to be patient. Once you get through the first few chapters, things pick up and become more interesting. My feeling is if I can walk away from a book and keep thinking about it's content, then it was worth the price. I did walk away thinking, and I did learn some things.

This is a fascinating book. It adopts a charitable, friendly tone in addressing the views and experiences of atheists from within the Judeo-Christian tradition. Novak sees a kind of common ground with atheists in the experience of nothingness (the dark night of the soul) experienced by Catholic mystics and articulated by those in the Carmelite tradition like St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Therese of Lisieux. This is a wise and thoughtful book, open and reflective in tone. It is a kind of summing up of the life experience and reflections of a lifetime--the author more than once mentions his age as of writing--74 years. What it is not: If you are looking for a polemic that takes on the knock-down arguments and jibes of popular atheists like Dawkins and Hitchens in a similar vein of knock-about debate, this is not your book, though it does discuss and dispute them. For that, the reader should go Dinesh D'Souza's What's So Great About Christianity? or one of several books that take these authors to task for their arrogance and ignorance, like Terry Eagleton's Reason, Faith, and Revolution or David Bentley Hart's Atheist Delusions. This book reminds me more of the 1981 film, My Dinner with Andre. Instead of dinner, though, Novak imagines a genial but spirited conversation (or series of conversations) over several brandies. (And I myself spent a few hours with this author, brandy in hand.) The real and imagined atheists who serve as his Alcibiades tend to be blunt, to the point, and commonsensical, like Wallace Shawn in the movie. Novak's replies are long and subtle, like Andre Gregory's in the film, but with less of the pretentious and more of sharp philosophical acuity. As Novak says and shows, it is much easier for a believer to put himself in the shoes of an atheist than the other way round.I recommend the book highly to atheists interested in an understanding of Jewish and Christian belief that goes beyond the usual objections and who are open to the possibility that those objections have been considered and responded to at a very high level of sophistication over centuries or millennia. But the book is also deeply enriching for believers who seek to understand their atheist friends and family members in way that respects them and is both civil and non-defensive. The book requires and rewards effort from both kinds of reader. For the closed-minded, whether atheist or believer, who are content to stay that way, this book is probably not for you.

I could pick many original ideas, but I refer on pages 43-48 as an example. On those pages Michel Novak gives "four arresting reflections" of Christianity. They are:1. A theology of the absurd2. The burden of sin3. The bright golden thread of human history4. The point of the cosmos is friendshipThese should arouse your curiosity for the book. I have never looked upon Christianity along those principles. This is one of the best books I have read lately. Novak points out that it is very easy for a Christian to understand atheism, but opposite seems to be true of many atheists. At least the books of the major proponents of atheism (Dawkins & Hitchens etc.) give this view. The major aim of the book is to improve the mutual understanding of people having different worldviews.

Should be read by believers and non-believers alike.

Novak is a thoughtful author with an immense intellectual depth and capacity. He deals humanely with an important subject that is "ripe" in our time. That subject is atheism and the problem of faith for believers in a period of unbelief and cynicism. He studiously and respectfully establishes common ground of thought and life that both atheists, non-believers and believers share. He shares his conclusions and beliefs while respectfully understanding that other conclusions can be drawn. Life does not spare anybody, we all wrestle with doubt.

quite interesting; lots to learn from this book;

Already a vegetarian, I wanted the books, all of these as they made a huge impact on me in the beginning to make the decision to become vegetarian. I am enjoying the various ways to prepare and the choices. I will be purchasing more of these when they update. I take in all information, regardless of what I am researching, and make my own choices on what will work for me and what may not. I also keep an open mind, which is a suggestion for any who might wish to learn about this type of healthier living. Are you subject to change? Easy to say, hard to do. I am "seasoned" and set in many ways, however, learning about this process, I am committed to it. And let me tell you, I feel so much better! It is not our fault how we feel after eating, unfortunately it is the chemical take over in some of our foods that just doesn't set well with our bodies. So, check out the reviews, read, go to the library and study this plan, for Forks over Knives is written by Doctors. Watch the videos, my personal fave was the Interviews, learned so very much! Give it a shot!

Here's the book: Eat a whole food, plant based breakfast the first week; add a whole food, plant based lunch in week two; and a whole food, plant based dinner in week three. Keep that up and there you are. The recipes are listed in the back half and you pick the ones you want for meals and snacks. If you're completely new to the idea of plant based eating, have no idea of how it works or where to start, then this is the book for you. If you already have the cookbook, or if you have another good book of recipes then you can just use what you've got and watch some of the big names on YouTube to answer questions about nutrition: i.e., Dr. McDougall, Dr. Fuhrman, Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. Esselstyn etc., and save the price of this book. It is loaded with inspirational quotes to motivate newbies and the recipes are simple and easy to use: But as I said, if you've got any experience in cooking this way and/or if you're already up on the nutrition and have your own reasons for eating this way, then this book is going to simply be a repetition of what you already know.

I watched the movie and really enjoyed it. However, this book is titled as the Forks Over Knives "Plan" in which it is hardly a plan. It is a book that explains what the movie did, throws in recipes at the end, and calls it a plan. The end of the book has a list of resources such as the Engine 2 diet, which is the same as the Forks Over Knives plant based philosophy and actually is a plan with real guidance. If you are looking for regurgitated science from the movie, this book is for you. If you are looking for an actual plan look into Engine 2.

Great book. Sad to learn that oil is the enemy of my life. However, after following the recommendations for the lifestyle/dietary change I saw results and feel so much better. If everyone changed to a plant based diet for even a few weeks we would all be better for it. Good to watch the Netflix doc too. My absurdly stubborn dad even said he felt better after just changing his breakfast routine. Do the math people and get this book!!

I got the Kindle version because I was traveling and anxious to start reading this . However, I wish I would have gotten the hard copy because there is a ton of really good recipes in here I want to try. For me, a real honest to goodness paper book is best for reference and recipes. I may get the Forks Over Knives Cookbook, but will also be going back to this one as well. Lots of good info and recipes to try.

I have been on this plan for only a month, and already it has started reversing my diabetes! My doctor lowered my insulin dosage from 18 iu to 10 iu and he may still have to lower it more come my next visit in 3 months. I'm sleeping so much better as well! I used to stay away from potatoes because they skyrocketed my sugar readings but now they are one of my main food sources with no effects on my readings.I fully applaud this plan and would highly recommend it to anyone who's dealing with major health issues such I was. Even my kidney function has improved! I always thought eating healthy was expensive I was WRONG! Everything I eat is very affordable compared to relying on animal based foods.

Life changing! Started this in Nov and still sticking to it 3 months later. I've lost 15 pounds and feel great! My skin has improved and so has my mood.

I would definetely recommend this book to start your Vegan lifestyle. It gives a daily plan on transitioning.

a great cleaver name for a vegan diet without the politics. After 6 weeks on this plan , im down 20 lbs, a1c dropped from 7.4 to 5.5, and all the rest of my numbers look great. This plan works for me. Be organized, plan weeks meals, lots of cooking. But it works for me. Thanks

From the Publisher

General Chuck Yeager, the greatest test pilot of them all -- the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound . . .the World War II flying ace who shot down a Messerschmitt jet with a prop-driven P-51 Mustang . . .the hero who defined a certain quality that all hotshot fly-boys of the postwar era aimed to achieve: the right stuff. Now Chuck Yeager tells his whole incredible life story with the same "wide-open, full throttle" approach that has marked his astonishing career. What it was really like enaging in do-or-die dogfights over Nazi Europe. How after being shot over occupied France, Yeager somehow managed to escape. The amazing behind-the-scenes story of smashing the sound barrier despite cracked ribs from a riding accident days before. The entire story is here, in Yeager's own words, and in wondeful insights from his wife and those friends and colleagues who have known him best. It is the personal and public story of a man who settled for nothing less than excellence, a one-of-a-kind portrait of a true American hero.

This book has so many fascinating stories about the General's life and career. It's a lesson on leadership. I use some of his principles in current work as an investor. He said when everything is going really well, he uses that time to double check everything rather than get complacent. He said when interviewers would ask him if he ever worried about a plane just blowing up on him, he responded that there would not be much point on worrying about something he had no control over. Instead, he would try to think about what he could control, such as where could he land in an emergency and how he could quickly egress from a plane that was in trouble. Excellent advice. I was fortunate to have General Yeager autograph my copy of this book when he visited Travis AFB.

Gen. Yeager did his sound barrier thing during the month and year I was born. Growing up in the LA suburb of Burbank, CA, I recall as a kid on the playground at school looking to the north and seeing white lines in the sky. I watched these lines extend in slow motion. Every once in a while, if the wind was blowing the right direction, we would hear a muffled explosion. Had no idea about those sonic booms until we heard about it on the radio. By the time I enlisted in the Air Force in 1966, Chuck Yeager was a household name without knowing of his beyond-belief WWII escapades. Yeah, I became an AC Delco fan because of him. If you have heard him speak, you can "hear" him narrating this book. The additional insights from his wife, Glennis, as well as his friends and colleagues add dimension and validity to his words. This book was written by a pilot, who loves to fly. It is written in a polished down-home, backwoods dialect that is so endearing. It is no wonder that just about every fighter pilot that has come down the pipe has tried to emulate that soft West Virginia twang. Gen. Chuck Yeager is a legend. We are privileged to read his story in his own words.

General Yeager is in a class of individuals that includes historical figures like Horatius and Leonidas. Fewer and fewer men are entering that class. There are still men like Chesley Sullenberger but more men like Francesco Schettino, the Captain of the Costa Concordia, are being produced. Yeager showed courage and character in everyday life as well as in combat. The item that interested me the most about this book was his admission that he was a war criminal. This is an example of his courage and character and I am certain his editor suggested that he remove the information. Yeager writes, “We were ordered to commit an atrocity. I’m certainly not proud of that particular strafing mission against civilians. But it is there, on the record and in my memory." “If it occurred to anyone to refuse to participate (nobody refused, as I recall) that person would have probably been court-martialed. I remember sitting next to (Major Donald H. Bochkay) Bochkay at the briefing and whispering to him: ‘If we’re gonna do things like this, we sure as hell better make sure we’re on the winning side.’” Respected historian have done their best to ignore items like this. It does not conform to the crusader narrative.

Great book and a good read even the second time. They don't make men like Chuck Yeager anymore and if they do, they are few and far between. There is a lot of the science and skill of flying in this book and it gets pretty technical at times. Of course pilots will love it. I'm not a pilot but a man of science and a military history buff and I loved it.

It had been a long time since I has read this book; several decades, in fact. Reading it again was a pleasure. My dad was a WW II vet who served in B-26's over Europe, and who then joined the USAF when it was formed; dad was a big admirer of Yeager. Reading his book brought back what those early years were like; it was a different time and a different pace. Things happened quickly; when the jet age arrived new planes were hitting the skies every year for about a decade.

Great autobiography of General Yeager! Was excited to find it in such great shape and with his autograph!
