Just like the Visual Literacy book, this text also provides enough justification to use graphic novels in the classroom. Each chapter provides lessons or suggested activities that can be done in the classroom with prominent graphic novels. Examples of these are Beowulf, Persepolis, Fagin the Jew, Spiderman, among others. It is very important for the editor as well for the contributors to this text to connect the graphic novel with curriculum endorsed texts. for example, Fagin the Jew is connected to Oliver Twist, and X-Men adventure with Dante's Inferno, or The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom with Scarlett Letter. In this manner, the authors constantly persuade us that many of these graphic novels are as valid in the classroom as any of the canonical texts. Convince schools of the value of graphic novels is Mr. Bucky Carter's crusade. By the way, I bought the Beowulf graphic stroy with the intention of using it in the classroom thanks to this book. I highly recommend it.

I bought this book because the title caught my attention. I was intrigued with the idea of using graphic novels to build literacy. Reading this book was like awakening from a deep sleep, completely refreshed and energized to face the day ahead. The articles were well presented, and offered encouragement to any teacher who is willing to take on the task of using graphic novels as a teaching aide. The book is not a "how to" book, as one reviewer indicated. What it does is to share experiences of teachers who implemented aspects of teaching graphic novels in their classrooms, what they did and how it turned out. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the articles and didn't scan through for pertinent facts as I normally would have. "Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels Page by Page, Panel by Panel" is a must read for all high school language arts teachers.

I'm teaching Persepolis to an honors class, and I was hoping to find some concrete examples of how to teach a graphic novel. This book has some interesting articles about using graphic novels and the efficacy of incorporating them into the program, but it is not a "how to" in any sense. These articles would be great for someone researching graphic novels in the classroom - it would be better if it included some generalized elements of graphic novels and even some lessons that could be used.

"Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels" is an innovative collection of essays by various professors and school teachers which shows the value of graphic novels and comic books in the classroom. In an era when many schools struggle to teach their students the basic skills necessary to survive and thrive in society, the writers in this book offer an alternative and entertaining way to teach literacy, writing skills, and social awareness. English teachers from middle school through high school would do well to read these essays for some great ideas on capturing their students' attention and getting them to learn the power of the English language.The book is edited by James Bucky Carter, a professor at the University of Texas El Paso who earned his Ph.D. in English education at the University of Virginia. In addition to the introduction, Carter also wrote two essays in the book. One lays out a possible lesson plan for teaching "The Scarlett Letter" using a graphic novel for comparison. In the other essay, Carter shows teachers how to use the "Spider-Man" comic book series to improve students' writing skills and help them find their own voice in their writings. Among other topics covered in the book, the various authors demonstrate a creative pairing between Dante's "Inferno" and "The X-Men" comic book series, the uses of the graphic novel in teaching a complex text such as "Beowulf," and using graphic novels to tackle the inherent antisemitism in the works of Charles Dickens.While this book does not necessarily claim to offer the best techniques for teaching English (Carter acknowledges that adolescent boys might find some comic books more interesting than adolescent girls, for example), it makes great strides toward establishing the legitimacy of comic books and graphic novels in teaching. After reading "Building Literacy Connections with Graphic Novels," teachers should come away with some different and new methods to employ in their classroom, backed up by research and results. For those teachers having trouble getting through to their students, I recommend reading this book to see if graphic novels may be a solution.
