I already own a copy of the first edition, a paperbound book, as well as the e-book version. I wear a hair system to cover over my balding head and was wondering what was involved in making a hair system; consequently, I purchased this book after doing an online evaluation of books on wig making. What a treasure this book is for anyone wanting to know about wig making, as well as someone who actually wants to do it. I was so inspired by the documentation that I actually purchased all the tools needed (canvas head, good quality lace, human hair, ventilating tools and a fine scissors). I watched several youtube videos (as well as the ones by Ruskai and group on their website) and started ventilating my lace cap. It took a while for me to get the hang of it but I thoroughly enjoyed making my own toupee. It looks as good as the ones I purchased from a wig maker. I will probably continue making my own toups from this point on.I will not repeat all of the good comments others have made on this superb book, but will emphasize that it comes with a lot of clearly written directions, excellent illustrations and good references. I talked extensively with Gabriel at De Meo brothers in New Jersey, suppliers of high quality hair and lace netting for professionals in the film industry and the theatre, and he agreed that this is THE book one should get in order to proceed with this venture.I like that this edition is now in hard cover that is wire bound (Wire O Binding). This is accomplished by gluing the last, thick page of the book onto the heavy, glossy back cover so that the whole book is held onto the cover by means of the last page. The front is not bound to the hard cover at all. This enables the reader to open the book so that it lies completely flat on your work surface. HOWEVER, be very careful not to turn the front cover back onto the back cover (like you would with some spiral bound documents) as this will cause the book to completely separate from the hard cover. It took me awhile to re-join the two and I did damage some of the holes. In order to prevent this from happening again, I will run a wire to completely close over the gap in the Wire O binding at the back of the book where the pages may escape.A better way of binding this book would be to use a spiral (rather than Wire O) binding that penetrates holes in the front and back covers, making it impossible for the two to separate. It would not look as nice as the present binding, but it would permit one to completely open that book so only one page is viewed at a time. Plus, this would make for a much sturdier binding that will last much longer than the Wire O binding.

Phenomenal read and sets you on the right track for professional wig making. I suggest getting the next Volume for in depth styling techniques through the ages (I purchased Victorian to Present), as this book focuses more on the basic foundations of caring for, washing, storing, steaming and even building wigs. I personally was up to speed with most of the chapters, but there were amazing details about adding lacefront to hardfront wigs and ventilating/lace and hair direction and head measurements and tracings. It’s like my new bible for ventilating.

Wonderfully detailed photos and description of the ventilation process as well as many other techniques and terms used in the business. A comprehensive text that I plan to refer to a lot in the future. I also recommend Allison Lowery's other two other texts entitled Historical Wig Styling.

Amazing book! It has all about the different types of laces and hair and needles. It shows you how to take measurements when making custom wigs. It teaches you ventilating and wefting. Great facial hair chapter and styling chapter. Full of beautiful pictures! There's also a really cool section on building wigs with cage bases and finding jobs.

Outstanding book on wigs and wig making. I've rarely read a book on any subject that was as clearly and expertly written.

For anyone truly interested in actually making/building/repairing lace wigs, this book is a treasure! I was actually a little surprised that it goes into such detailed depth with regards to not only wigmaking, but all the other kinds of hairpieces and how they are made and when to use them(when working in theater or tv). The pictures are all clear, and well lit. There's even a few very short companion videos on an accompanying website showing knotting and sewing techniques....The only thing i think would make this book better is an accompanying dvd to show more techniques in real time, and more websites/sources to actually buy tools and lace and hair from. The author makes references to one website in particular, which i visited, and there's very little actually on the website, sent them an email, to which i never received a reply. It can be hard to find all the tools/materials you need for wigmaking in one spot, so i've had to piece my kit together from several different places, including ebay. You've gotta shop around though, cuz several people sell the exact same things, some very reasonably, and some mark prices up dramatically to make a larger profit...So in a nutshell, i would definitely recommend this book. It's like the "textbook" of wigmaking. The book, combined with the author's short vids, and user uploaded vids on youtube are all you need to learn to make/build/repair/knot lace wigs.

Absolutely fascinating -- the walk through of how to make wigs also indirectly explains why they are so ridiculously expensive to buy pre-made.. This book is very straightforward and methodical, and includes a lot of pictures to help visualize the techniques it explains. I would give it six stars if I could.

I ordered this book because I want to learn how to add hair to a lace top wig and instructional material is scarce. I was a bit put off by the price of this book but I think it is worth the money. This book is written by two people that have years of experience making and caring for wigs. They photos are great, the different techniques are great and they really go into great detail in the art of making theatrical and non-theatrical wigs.

See? This story is so hot that it's made my fingers stutter. It's felt like a long wait since the wowser end of "One Good Crash," and Sabrina Stark has delivered! You don't have to read OGC to understand "One Bad Idea," but you should because it adds even more color to this new book. For me, Allie almost stole the show in OGC because of her unforgettable personality, and waiting for her story was so worth it.No need to recap the story too much because other reviewers have that covered. What I can't say enough about is the chemistry between outspoken Allie and hunky Jaden. We're talking chemistry way outside the bedroom that turns blazin' hot between the sheets. Is Jaden a jerk? Sometimes, but you might call him a jerk with higher goals. Does Allie overthink everything? Sometimes, but Jaden needs a girl like her to challenge him and make him better. Their banter is some of the most sparkling that I've read and once or twice it even led me to mutter, "I guess she told YOU."I'm a long-time fan of Ms. Stark, and this may be the funniest book that she's written, which is saying something after the brothers in "Illegal Fortunes." Her villains are so realistic and so much fun to hate that you wonder what kind of psychotic people the author has encountered in her life. (This can't all be fiction, right?) Not to give anything away, but I literally lol'd at the running joke about the seat and whose *ss was supposed to be in it. It's hard to explain, but once you read the book, you'll laugh too. Highly recommended!

Allie and Jaden’s story had me from the very beginning; their personality’s are great. I love Sabrina Stark’s books, she never fails to let me down. I highly recommend this book! 5 star read.

I had the pleasure of reading the book prior to One Bad Idea, One Good Crash. If you have the opportunity to read that book, then you received a different perspective in this book. It isn’t necessary to read One Good Crash, but this book makes more sense if you had. This book follows Cassidy’s (the h from One Good Crash) best friend, Allie. Allie has come to rescue Cassidy in Florida after a disconcerting call. On arriving to the house where Cassidy was last found, Allie meets Jaden, the brother of the H from One Good Crash. Jaden is odd and exasperates Allie from the start. He is brash, confusing, and odd. Unfortunately, they are forced to continue to confront each other because Jaden’s brother, Jax, offers Allie a job as a personal assistant...to Jaden. From there, sparks fly. And an arrangement is made. Can two people who seem to detest each other fall for each other? That is the premise of One Bad Idea.When you read a Sabrina Stark book, you are reading a dialogue book. I know when I read One Good Crash I found myself overwhelmed by the back and forth of the characters. However, it is part of Stark’s charm as a writer. This continues in this book.There is a constant push and pull between Allie and Jaden. At times, it can be frustrating because you don’t feel “let in” to the exchange. However, if you stick with you, you eventually see the chemistry between the two characters.Jaden is seemingly annoying from the outset. In fact, no one except maybe his brother Jax seem to like him. However, it’s a bit of a front, and his true nature is revealed eventually. Once it’s revealed, you will fall in love with him. You will have to read for quite a bit before it’s revealed, but once it is, it’s one of the best parts of the book.Allie is a typical h in an enemies-to-lovers tale. Her feelings change at the spur of the moment, and the reader must wait for the revelation of Jaden’s true character for her to finally accept him. It can be frustrating at times waiting for her to figure it. However, Allie is an amazing friend to Cassidy, and she’s the perfect match for Jaden. She is the “yin to his yang.”If you like the enemies to lovers trope or a love-hate relationship that ends with an HEA, then you will enjoy One Bad Idea. Just remember that you’re reading a dialogue heavy romance with this book.

When Allie races to save her friend Cassidy after she receives Cassidy's panicked phone call, she must deal with the aftermath. She 'borrows' a car from her ex-boyfriend and races to the rescue, only to find out that Cassidy is fine. However, in looking for Cassidy, she meets the unpleasant bad boy, Jaden. Little does she know that the tattooed hunk is actually a well-to-do alcohol manufacturer.With no money and little left to go back to, Allie accepts a job at Jaden's executive assistant. The two drive each other crazy - until they don't. They begin a physical relationship that starts to morph into something more, at least for Allie. Jaden is so jaded that he won't consider a true relationship.The first third of this book was a bit muddled, and was filled with a lot of hints and unexplained coincidences to drive the story forward. Many of those coincidences were explained later and pulled the story together a bit, but throughout Jaden's personality is off-putting and while he secretly does some kind things for Allie, his blunt and seemingly uncaring attitude and speech toward Allie is really unforgivable at times.While Jaden turns out to be devoted, protective and loving, getting his character to that place takes some time and his behavior early in the book is unattractive. Allie, for being in her mid-twenties, seems to be a bit of a doormat where Jaden is concerned and too naïve for her own good. The two together seem to improve each other somewhat, leading to their HEA.Overall a moderately good romance read.This is a voluntary review of an ARC of the story.

This book just wasn't for me. It started straight off confusing. I even searched online to make sure there wasn't a book before this one that would explain things. I didn't care for the characters because I felt they were a bit too immature all the time. Some of the time is fine but it just went on and on. I normally hate leaving low star ratings on books but since I voluntarily read this book to give my honest opinion, that's just what I am doing. It seemed to drag on forever and I found I could barely stay focused on the story. If I had bought the book myself, I wouldn't have finished it. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book

"The Art of the Renaissance" is part of the "Masters of Art" series which was first published in Italy in the 1990's. Like all the other books in the series, "The Art of the Renaissance" is a large format book. The production values are very high. Along with beautiful reproductions of Renaissance paintings, this volume has accompanying illustrations produced by two master illustrators, Simone Boni and L.R. Galante. Boni and Galante are two of the finest historical illustrators ever to work in children's literature. The text by Lucia Corrain is well written and does a good job of covering the remarkable artistic flowering that took place in Europe. This book is geared towards children of middle school age. For younger children, I would recommend Piero Ventura's masterful "Great Painters." All in all, this is a beautiful book and I would recommend it and all the other books in "The Masters of Art" series.

I found Friedman's discussion on Beirut to be fascinating and insightful. His discussion about his experiences in Israel...not so much. First, he claims to have been a childhood supporter of Israel, bolstered by Israel's victory in the 1967 war. This is an attempt to establish his impartial credentials; unfortunately, he's revising his own personal history to get there. Friedman has been pro-Palestine from his time at St Antony's College, Cambridge. This is fine, but he needs to be honest with his readers regarding his political bent. His anti-conservative obsession (whether it's discussing American politics or Israeli politics) is palatable and projects itself on his ridiculous predictions of Israel's self-destruction because of its intolerance towards Arabs and non-orthodox Jews. He spends an inordinate amount of time wondering out loud why his view of Israel had changed so much from his teen years to his 40s. Well, my guess is because you were 40ish when you wrote this book, not 15. I hope your worldly view had changed with the passage of time. Unfortunately, it really hadn't. What he projects on nearly every page is a distaste for Israel, its military, and its institutions (especially when conservatives are in power); see his current rantings about Netanyahu. I found his references to Mahmoud Abbas to be interesting. Friedman mentions that Abbas masterminded the Achille Lauro hijacking and murder of American Leon Klinghoffer as if it were no big deal, and then returns to criticizing Israel and its military especially during its time in Lebanon and the "occupied" West Bank. His use of the term "occupied" is so politically correct, but factually incorrect. The West Bank was actually occupied by Jordan after 1948, as was their occupation of Jerusalem (which the UN had intended to be an "open city" under control of the international community.) After the '67 war Jordan relinquished all claims to the territory west of the River Jordan, the fact that Israel and PLO/PA claim the same territory factually makes it the "disputed" territory. Although I finished reading his book, I kept checking the last page to see how much more of this drivel I was forcing myself to read.

During my service in Armenia, I came across this book in the Peace Corps library. Having enjoyed "The World is Flat" I decided to try it out. Part of my rating is based on the fact that it is not only well-informed but very readable, unlike many non-fiction books. His work as a journalist for the NY Times is surely a benefit to the readers who like me might be exploring this topic in depth for the first time. I never felt buried in facts. I also liked the fact that he was stationed there during the 80's and saw things "up close and personal." And finally, it gave me an understanding of "Politics as Theater." Neither side seemed that interested in real compromise but just tipping the Scales of Sympathy on the World's Stage their way. When the GOP and Obama faced off over Fiscal Cliff in December, the same dynamics seemed to be in place. Even though Friedman is portraying events that are now over 25 years past, it is a vivid time capsule of how deeply embedded are the dysfunctional dynamics between these two countries. It also gave me some historical perspective on the Armenian attitude toward Turkey that I encountered daily in the adult population. The historical lesson I came away with was that building your National Identity around "being right" does not give the next generation very much room to negotiate for a better future.

As a college student studying International Affairs, I managed to avoid the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for 4 years. I never felt like I had a fight in it, and felt the field had "too many cooks in the kitchen." I focused mostly on other regions and topics, generally aware of big picture issues with Israel, settlements, and the plight of Palestinians. I came across this book in searching for books on Syrian history for my job and decided to give it a shot, at least for the portions covering Lebanese history. I have never been a fan of Mr. Friedman's work before, but this book really is a masterpiece, and one that should be read by anyone looking to study history, the Middle East, or international affairs.This book has almost too many good qualities to list. It is excellently nuanced and balanced, detailed enough for the expert, but explained and fast paced enough for the novice of the region. Do not be fooled by the length of the book, it is a genuine page turner, with only a few slow points, and by the end you are wishing someone would take the initiative and cover the years in depth since its printing in 1988. I was initially afraid at a book so old, afraid I would be missing newly found information unavailable at the time of writing, but unfortunately the region, particularly Lebanon and Syria, isn't covered much even by scholars.Mr. Friedman is passionate about the topic, to be sure, but as he notes, true friends are honest with each other. Having lived in Beirut for a number of years, and then moving to Jerusalem, he has friends on both sides of the situation, but isn't afraid to discuss issues for a real and lasting peace. The biggest issue, for both sides, seemed to be a misunderstanding of the other group. While some Palestinians viewed the Israelis as a minor blip in time on the land, who would eventually surrender the land and leave forever, the Israelis viewed the Palestinians under the umbrella of "Arabs" who would be at home anywhere, refusing to distinguish between an Arab in Egypt and an Arab in Iraq. Leadership, or lack of it, fed into those beliefs. Both sides lacked bold leadership, as neither led from the front, but rather led from the polls. Instead of making bold initiatives toward peace, both felt that time was on their side, when it obviously only made the divisions deeper. In the rare case where leaders did make bold moves (Sadat), they were taken out by their own group, making it even more difficult to lead from the front.While the time in Beirut was the most interesting to me, his chapter on religion in Israel is really eye opening. We Americans tend to see other countries in generally black and white (West Germany good, East Germany bad) and forget that not all Israeli Jews are the same. The way Friedman goes into this topic is supremely interesting and profound, and something American Jews should certainly look at and discuss.It is something of a miracle that this book was written, on a region that is so often overlooked. With such an important topic, I'll take away everything bad I ever said about Mr. Friedman. My only regret on this book is that I did not read it earlier. This book is great for someone with very little information on the region or the expert on the region. Read it as soon as you can.
