In fact, “In Strangers Arms” connects all the Tango books I have read to the human reality of its formation, existence, and evolution. Beatriz, takes each essential element of Tango and creates the type of understanding that gives depth and breadth to each Tango experience. This book delves deeply into the “The Invisible Heart of the Dance.” But, it also unearths from the shallow descriptions many hold, the depth of the roots of Tango; the characteristics of its formative geography; how its poetry and musicality give expression to the various experiences within the human condition; its expanding global reach; and, a deeper understanding and interpretation of what we should actually be learning in our Tango classes. Since “In Strangers Arms” is written in a conversational 1st hand prose, it is not a book about Tango. This book, is in fact, Tango…

"This dance begins, as our lives begin: by embracing and trusting a stranger." Tango is not an easy subject to write about. Beatriz Dujovne is one of (in my opinion) just a handful of authors who have done so brilliantly. She writes from the perspective of being an Argentine-born scholar who has spent much of her life in the United States. This gives her, I think, both the insider's and outsider's perspectives that together are so necessary to appreciate the global phenomenon that tango has become. She accomplishes what I think is a true tour-de-force with this book: it is at once a meticulously researched example of academic integrity, and at the same time she conveys the unmistakeable sensibility of a deeply felt personal memoir, and her own connection to the dance is quite evident, while never taking center stage. If you love tango, read this book.

In Strangers' Arms offered more than I had anticipated. While I imagined it would focus solely on the dance (I perhaps should have read the description more closely!) the book considers tango using a much more multi-faceted approach. The dance is in there, and there are some interesting comments from dancers about what is going on when people dance tango which is not evident to those only observing. But there is also great material about the history, culture, geography and poetry of tango, all presented in a very personal way through the author's own experiences. This approach fits the subject matter perfectly - for someone happily lost in tango, it was a little like hearing someone you don't know describe their close relationship with a friend: you can both enjoy hearing about your friend and, through another's stories and experiences, come to understand them a little more.

I approached this book with the skepticism that it was just another Western oriented milonguera explaining their version of tango to the world. Instead, I found an insightful and informative account of the significance of tango. Of special interest were the neighborhood origins of so many of the poets, singers and musicians, and in particular a first class in-depth 'literary criticism' of a strong through line in the lyrics. . Dujovne is well prepared to place them in their socio-economic and cultural contexts thorough research, her psychological understanding and a personal passion for their meaning. There is also a good short history of the beginnings of tango which clears away a few of the myths.

I've often entertained the idea of DIY health and beauty techniques. However, honestly, I got pretty bored with it because they are EVERYWHERE ONLINE. I would pinterest ideas I wanted to try...never trying, they just became a collection of really great ideas. I never wanted to invest in a book, already done up for me....but....last night, my son was playing with my kindle and this morning I noticed we bought a book :-)In which, I don't regret. Yes, I'm one of those typical middle aged moms that allow their kids to do almost anything....but....not everything. We have a thirteen year old girl and a one year old boy.2.99 for a book that I've been interested in, but never decided to investigate to buy.....I'd say that was an investment.I went through the book this morning. I'm proud to own it. She makes it simple and sweet. And very thorough. My son chose well.Thank you kindly.I would certainly purchase again.

If you're breaking into using essential oils for your beauty regimen, this is a good place to start. Lots of tips along with detailed instructions on how to make the recipes. I would've liked to see a little more on why this, not that and potential options for substitution, but overall this book is pretty good. Recommended.

I LOVE this book. It is simple, straight to the point, and FULL of helpful information on how to easily make your own skin care products. The majority of our family is not, but my daughter and her husband are Vegan. I cannot believe how often she thanks me and talks about this book. I spend good money on Christmas gifts over the years and this ends up being the one to knock her socks off?! It like the kid who plays with the box instead of the toy you bought them! lol Still I’m grateful I just happened upon this and how much they love it!

I've read through all of the recipes - not impressed at all. Can't even return this - so basically $9 down the drain. Ironic that I purchased this to be greener - now i'm left with a book that is worthless...not even good enough to give to someone else.

I enjoy making and using natural products for my personal care, housecleaning, pet care, gardening, well just everything I can. Being free, I didn't expect much, but this book is a keeper. It is full of reasonable recipes to make and use.

Beautifully written. A quality book that is mesmerizing and hard to put down. We highly recommend this book to anyone.

This book has many of his iconic photos plus the stories behind them. The print quality is excellent, probably as good as the prints in his Iconic book and they are large prints. You will spend many hours to finish it. This book is a bargain!

Gave it as a gift to my grandson who loves photography. He really likes it!

This is a missed opportunity - there is not nearly enough here on McCurry's approach to photography. While some of the stories are compelling, the stories are second-hand, not written by Steve, and they often feel distant. While the photographs are amazing, there is far too much space give over to copies of his travel documents - page after page of these. What a waste of space! This space should have been devoted to more great images. Or there could have been more alternate images that didn't become featured, and he could have discussed what worked with some but less so with others - this would truly make for an insightful, educational experience. There is a section like this with an alternate version of the famous Afghan girl. There could have been more of these.

Such a beautiful book. I've always loved McCurry's photography. This book has amazing print quality and fascinating information about some of the more interesting periods in McCurry's increadile career. Must own for any fan the the real golden age of Nat Geo.

Having had a few days to reflect on it and collect my thoughts, I am still of two minds regarding Oathbringer, the 3rd massive tome of Brandon Sanderson's epic Stormlight Archive. There is a significant change of focus here, both in terms of characters and storytelling, and while parts of it worked very well for me - extraordinarily well, in fact - others fell flat or just felt tedious.For starters, this volume belongs to Dalinar and Shallan, resigning Kaladin (my favorite character from the first two books) to the background. In Dalinar's case, it turned out to be a surprisingly rewarding change, with extended flashback chapters that expose his darker, far more violent past, and which shed new light on his actions and attitudes over the first two books. We come to see him in an entirely new light, with a contrast between personalities so jarring that it's often painful to watch. Part of that is due to the presence of his wife, a woman whose name and face have been a gaping hole in his memories for so long, and part of that hinges on his pursuit of The Thrill, which made something of a monster of the man. Outside those flashbacks, his story is rather slow, full of politics and philosophical discussions that really weigh down the first half of the book, but they do lead us to some incredible revelations regarding the magic and mythology of the Desolation, the Voidbringers, the Heralds, Honorblades, spren, and more.In Shallan's case, while we get a lot more action and some genuine character development, I found her to be a rather tiresome character. It's a shame, because there is so much potential within her, especially with how her various roles and guises begin to bleed through to one another. Her personality just rubs me the wrong way, and even scenes that should be sweet or amusing come across as bland tripe. It doesn't help that a significant aspect of her character arc is completely undone in this volume, a revelation that I guess we should have seen coming, but which struck me as a cheap way of restoring conflict to her role. It's much-needed conflict, and does make her a little more interesting, but not enough to justify her page count. The only redeeming grace is her spren, Pattern, who never ceases to trigger my amusement and curiosity.Although it is Dalinar and Shallan who dominate the novel, I would also argue this is a story of minor characters taking on major significance. It's hard to talk about that significance without spoiling any aspects of the story, but characters like Renarin, Moash, and others get a chance to shine, and what happens to or around them is sometimes the most fascinating part of the story. Bridge Four has an important role to play here once again as well, but - for me, at least - their scenes just emphasize how far Kaladin is from the center of the story this time out.Oathbringer marks a lull in the series, but it's an important lull. As much as we may chafe against the pacing and the character point of views, we finally get answers . . . and we get a lot of them. So much of what was hidden or hinted at in the first two books is exposed here. We get answers, we get mythology, and we finally get some wider sense of world-building. It is here that the story begins to move away from the epic saga of ruling dynasty, and into the epic saga of a world on the brink of extinction. Having said all that, the last arc of the book is vintage Sanderson and well worth sticking around for. All the book's flaws are forgiven as all the threads come together and we realize, in hindsight, just how and why so many little things were significant. The final three-hundred pages (a novel on its own for most authors) are all climax, and they are some of the finest that Sanderson has ever written.So, not a perfect book, and probably the first time I really noticed the page count in a negative way, but I'm glad I had the time to linger over it, take my time, and digest it along the way. And, of course, I remain just as excited for the next installment.

Sanderson has fallen into the same trap Robert Jordan did: epic fantasy isn't epic because it's long; it's epic because it's intricate, beautiful, and can't be told as a smaller version without losing depth. Unfortunately, this one doesn't meet that criteria. Nearly 1/3rd of this book could have easily been cut without losing any feeling, plot lines, character depth, or world realism. Things would have moved along much nicer, and, quite frankly, it would have been more enjoyable to read.I'm all for description. I don't have any problem whatsoever with a slow plot line...when there's a reason for one. The only reason for one in this particular story was to fit the popular meaning for "epic".Sorry. I love the series and the concept. Write to tell. Write to share. Don't write to fill paper.

Sanderson is one of my favorite writers. Oathbringer was long awaited and I bought is as soon as it became available. I finished it today. There is quite a time lapse between the date of the purchase and today, which is the main reason for my three stars: it took me months to reach the 50% mark and just days to read through the other 50%. The second half of the book exceeded my expectations by far, it is perfect. The first half though, I could have done without. 'Unite them!' Yes, I got that the first time I read it. I typically give each book I am reading 50 to 100 pages before I put is aside because I don't like the style, the plot, the characters or find it simply boring. As it was written by Sanderson, I trudged on ... and on ... until I hit the aforementioned 50%. In short, if I had started on page 500, I would have given the book its five stars. For me, a very disappointing experience.

After having read this book, I needed to let it sit for a couple of days before attempting to write a review. It was just so much! On the one hand I must say that I loved this book. I preordered it months and months ago, and felt like a child at Christmas when it was finally delivered to my phone. Sleeping, working and basically doing anything other than just reading became a bother. Still, having finished I have some mixed feelings. Although we really had some nice plot and character developments it did not quite measure up. In a way a lot of it seemed a bit shallow (don’t kill me) for instance kaladin was a bit forgotten in this book, he was almost degraded to a side character. Shallan had some interesting reveals at the end of last book, but we did not really get a continuation on that, and her development through the book also seemed not quite enough. On the other hand Dalinar was nicely fleshed out, and became more nuanced, but at the same time I was not that lost in his story. You also had a lot of chapters dedicated to side character, and although adding to the overall plot, failed to drag me in. In a way this book might serve as a filler book, starting several threads that will become important in later books. It is supposed to be a 10? Piece series, so I definitely see the need. I also don't quite know how to feel about the crossover from the book warbreaker, since they have different magic systems, and I generally like my books to stay separate. I will not say anything more of that since I don't do spoilers. That said, this is still one of my favorite series at the time being, and I’m a dedicated fan that will definitely continue reading. Even if there was in my opinion some flaws, the level of writing and storytelling is FAR above most other fantasy currently on the market. Also the ending was quite satisfying so thumbs up for that!

Let me preface this by saying that I am a very particular when it comes to book buying, so when I saw this I was excited. My daughter loves learning, but biographies for kids can be somewhat dry when they are written for such young readers. This book is great because it managed to highlight their friendship, while maintaining the story pretty accurate. The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 star rating is honestly because I'm stingy with those, and save them for books that I absolutely adore.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were the best of friends while creating the Declaration of Independence and working towards independence from Britain. They were both ambassadors to European countries after the Revolutionary war, and in these roles they were also best of friends. However, when determining what kind of government the United States of America should have, they disagreed. They didn't disagree in a friendly way; they talked about each other behind each other's backs. They chose not to have anything to do with each other. Much later, after Adam's and then Jefferson had been President, they each went home to read and be with their families. During this time, they once again became friends, writing many, many letters back and forth.In "Worst of Friends" The story of Adams and Jefferson is told as a story almost every child has experienced. Who hasn't been so angry with a friend that he or she has wanted to do the equivalent of jumping on his wig in frustration. It makes two great men seem human. It also teaches a lesson about friendship: that when a best friendship appears to be lost, it may return again."Worst of Friends" also gives us an idea of what it's like to have a political friendship. When the two friends agree on politics, the friendship can be very close. When they disagree, sometimes the friendship has to cool down. But that doesn't mean that ultimately the two political friends don't have a great deal of respect for each other.The illustrations in this book are lighthearted and funny. This is an OUTSTANDING book in todays world. Our elementary students can see how political parties were at odds way back then as well. The present day environment is nothing new

For my granddaughter who is beginning to be interested in history. I think it's a great way of presenting the friendly conflict of these two founding fathers.

Very cute book breaking down history for kids. My daughter though it was a great book for her oral report on John Adams and her best friend is doing it on Thomas Jefferson so I am sure they will come up with quite a cute skit!
