This little book has a big heart and is well worth reading on your Kindle. I have some printed versions, but recently had the opportunity to visit Walden pond (a state reservation) near Concord, MA, and loaded the Kindle version on my Kindle Fire as I could then read it without having my book suffer travel wear and tear. So I took the train from Boston, somewhere close to Harvard University, towards Concord, and spent the day walking the pathways surrounding the pond. I could read the book and search for matching descriptions of the pond area as described by Henry Thoreau. That was a lot of fun. The train line still runs on its original track, and you can imagine Henry listening to the whistle and seeing the smoke of the train. The park and pond is beautiful, and combined with the book and Henry Thoreau's stories, transfers one back in time to another world, a world that was both different and similar to the world that we know. There is a life-size model of Henry Thoreau's cabin (he lived in this cabin for 2 years and 2 months, and started construction late March 1845) in the parking lot across the road, and construction has started on a new visitors centre. It was a wonderful experience to actually feel like I was there with Thoreau at Walden Pond. The way he studied and described simply living and the appreciation of nature fits right into my values. I loved having insight to a life that took place so many years ago through his eyes, and with his mind and heart. He expresses his beliefs about life and society so eloquently. At times he goes into great detail in his observations, but then masterfully makes a valid point that is truly inspiring. This is a book that really makes you think about the purpose of our existence in this world, our values, and how we should live.

I first read "Walden" in a freshmen seminar course in American Lit, and it was quite daunting reading at the time. Thoreau seemed an over-rated author: he darts from topic to topic with little to no transition, he quotes obscure passages, he sermonizes. And perhaps most frustrating of all, he wants his writing to be ambiguous (see for instance, Chapter 18), and for an assiduous college student eager to absorb and analyze, this can be quite an overwhelming experience. So, I got very little of Thoreau at the time.Ten year's later, I decide that I would pick "Walden" up again. I told myself that I would stop whenever the reading became too discursive or abstract... And I did not stop until I reached the end!As any student of early American lit. knows, Thoreau built a small house for himself in the woods of Walden Pond in Concord, MA, where he lived for two years (1845-1847), documenting his experiences living there in "Walden." He hoed beans for a living, lived a mile from his nearest neighbor and survived on the absolute minimum that he could. In his downtime, he would swim, fish, read and take in his surroundings, describing every sight and sound with the utmost care. Thoreau creates for his reader an unforgettable Nature-observing experience with such richness of detail that we feel we are right there with him. We hear the owl's cry, we witness the loon diving into the pond and the two ants going head-to-head in battle, we see the blue of Walden Pond. He is a student of Nature of the highest order and extracts from each of these experiences a parable about humanity: what we lack and how we can be free. For Thoreau, Walden Pond is a place of purity, an oasis, an Eastern paradise on earth, a Ganges.An ardent non-conformist, Thoreau also uses this book as a sounding board for his "radical" views and practices. He detests the railroad and its encroachment upon his land (and more generally, that of technology on human and animal life). He refuses to pay taxes to a government that supports slavery and the Mexican War (for which he is briefly imprisoned during one of his sallies to the village). He prefers Eastern spirituality and meditation to Western religiosity. He spurns the high life and abstains from drinking and eating meat. He believes that man is in a dormant intellectual state, from which he can one day rise and embrace the dawn. And the list continues...Thoreau's prose is also rather unique. What one must remember is that he is faithful student of Emerson and like Emerson, his paragraphs often contain non sequiturs, digressions and sometimes outright contradictions. It was perhaps this lack of logical linearity that initially kept from enjoying his work as a college student. We must be indulgent with Thoreau: his wit, his aphorisms, his acumen are well worth the sometimes uncomfortable task of deciphering his prose. I am very glad that at nearly the same age as Thoreau, I took a journey to Walden Pond with him.

Review of ANNOTATED EDITION, not of Thoreau's work. Potentially great idea. Many of the annotations were superficial or unnecessary, although others helpful. Biggest problem with this is the printer's layout, which has two careless oversights: size and position on page. Two pages of text have been squeezed onto a single page (to allow the side-by-side commentary), resulting in tiny print. Tough on anyone over 40. Then, the printer left wide margins on the *outside* of the page, and squeezed Thoreau's text into the binding. Really foolish use of the available space.The result is something that could have been fascinating being just plain awkward and unsatisfying to handle and read.

One of my favorite books by Henry David Thoreau. The illustrations add to it nicely and the cover and binding seem well made. This book is excellent for anyone who loves the idea of escaping from society and finding yourself. It serves as a reminder that as modern society advances, we become almost less human, going about the motions rather than living and experiencing all that life and nature has to offer. Great book for any avid nature lover.

This is a fascinating and challenging read. There have always been many many ways to confront infertility. Murugan uses Kali and Ponna, a couple in South India 100 years ago to look at one. The cultural parts of this novel were completely new to me and for that new knowledge I am grateful. Originally written in Tamil, this is nicely translated- the writing flows. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC.

I outright disliked this book. A couple in rural 19th century India struggle to have a child. Their families are horrible. Their neighbors are horrible. Their friends are horrible. They taunt the husband, calling him impotent. They deride the wife as a cursed loser. By the end, even the couple themselves are horrible. The husband thinks it's funny to tease the wife by telling her that he might take another wife. Then he's surprised and annoyed when she cries. Ultimately they consider taking part in an anonymous ritual that might result in conception, but it was impossible to like them or even to sympathize with them by that point. Skip this book. Read something cheerful, like The Road.

I found the descriptions of Tamil life interesting, since I knew nothing of this culture. However, the plot was a one-trick pony: a couple is infertile. There is a tradition where for one night, women can have sex with anyone roaming the streets. Will Ponna, the wife, do it to conceive a child? And that's the plot. There is no advancement of action- just the same commentary from the villagers over and over, and the waiting until the night when she might have sex with a pickup. Finally, in the last couple of pages, she either does or doesn't. I won't say which, to avoid a spoiler. Structurally, this just fell flat for me.

This book was so boring, I couldn’t finish it. I struggled to get through one third and gave up. The dialogu and characters were dull and nothing happens. The couple were in love but couldn’t conceive a baby. All dialogue revolved around this issue, except for some petty arguments.

We had a great 1 week vacation to Colombia, relying on this guide and it did not disappoint. Lonely Planet was pretty much spot on with some great recommendations on sights and dining options. I did not rely on their hotel recommendations so cannot comment on those.

Lots of useful information in one place.

We spent 3 months in Colombia, found LP's guide to be only marginally helpful or accurate. I wish they'd dispense with the flowery prose and just stick to the facts. It seems that the writers may have been a little careless in their research.

Superb! All the recommendations were right on target and we used them faithfully during our Zona Cafetera roadtrip. I am originally from Cali and all the sights listed in that section are tried and true.

The first illustration is a minimalist line drawing. The tree that follows has more detail, but there’s also an ethereal figure climbing it, which makes it a little spooky but quite interesting.After that artsy start it settles into huge info dumps. There are entire pages full of leaf shapes, for instance, and another of seeds. I don’t know the age group targeted here, but I’d imagine it would take early teens, and then they’d already have to be interested in science and such, to get into all this. It feels like a science textbook at a performing arts high school.Fun fact: cork protects its oak from fires, if the humans haven’t harvested it all for their wine bottles.There are similar chapters on flowers, animals, rocks, and so on. There’s a special section on the platypus, which feels right.From the mentions of the country, as well as the names of the author and illustrator, it’s pretty easy to tell this book originated in Portugal.Fun fact: biologists howl too.Some sections include homework assignments.

I really enjoyed this book as it reintroduced me to a number of concepts that I had learned while in school, but hadn't really thought about or explored more since then. For learning about nature, I tend towards children'ts books because they are generally written in a clear and concise manner without any judgement and this book definitely fulfills those categories. I also really enjoyed the artwork that went along with the different pages and can see how it would appeal even more to a younger reader.Favorite fact learned is that daisies are actually comprised of more than one flower, you just have to look closely :)I received this book in exchange for a review, but the opinions are my own.

But it's a good group/family read ..to go along with exploring the outside world.

The 'Not So Little Book of Surprises' is as delightful as it is deeply spiritual. It reminds me of a favorite picture book of ancient paintings I loved as child. I would pour over that book again and again from a comfy armchair near the fire throughout my childhood years and beyond. As I sit beside the fire now, taking a magical journey with 'The Not So Little Book of Surprises, gazing at its intriguing artwork, I can feel my consciousness shift in profound ways and realize that this very special and beautiful book now fills that sacred place in our home as our new favorite book.

I am blown away by the experience I had in reading The (not so) Little Book of Surprises. Not only is it a feast for the eyes, every word touched my soul deeply. All of this and a sense of humor as well. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages. This book is going to be an important holiday gift for my list. And one of the surprises was the price, I sure would have expected to pay more than $50 for the beautiful quality of this book (it was less than $20!). Anyone who comes to my house will see my copy proudly displayed on my coffee table.

This book is gorgeous! The words of wisdom and humor by author Deirdre Hade are exquisitely expressed by Endre Balogh's illustrations and images. The book's talented creator, William Arntz (director, producer and writer of What the Bleep Do We Know!?) put a delightful twist in the makings of this book. Excellent for reading in your quiet, reflective moments plus it's an excellent conversation piece and/or a perfect gift. Absolutely love it.

I am a big fan of Endre Balogh's artwork and music, so I was excited for this book. It's so beautiful and majestic, AND the spiritual wisdom is such a gentle reflection of some deep spiritual concepts. Turned out to be much more than a coffee table book. Love it.

This is a really beautiful book from cover to cover. It has really inspired me a lot and I highly recommend it. If you were to read it straight through like a novel, you could finish it in less than two hours – but I think you would miss a lot by reading it that way. Every page contains words of insight and wisdom and surprising images that are thought-provoking which take some time to digest. It’s a great book to leave on your coffee table or night stand to read and reflect on the unique and profound truths within.

This is a book to adorn the coffee table, bed side table, kitchen table, bathroom magazine rack, sunroom, library or even the car! Open it up to any page and a beautiful Truth is revealed.
