As the weather cools, readers are treated to a delightful nighttime spread of the moth finally emerging and flying to a cricket's tune as the decayed flower's seeds dance all around. Though this could nearly work as a wordless book, the invented, sometimes alienlike language seemingly contains real syntax and offers readers the opportunity to puzzle over the meanings of the words and tell the story using their own interpretations. A fun, whimsical and enchanting picture book.This book is the perfect read aloud. There's plenty of humor kids will get, illustrations they'll love to look at, and patterns through out the story kids will enjoy pointing out. Not to mention the wonder and intrigue that comes with discovering something new, as these bugs do. The reading out loud portion is so fun! Once you decipher the words you're reading, you realize what a genius Ellis is in the way she wrote this book. Plus, reading this out loud means you get to do your best bug impression.These illustrations are great! What a great picture book to look through. This bug world is enchanting, as the characters are brought to life with human like characteristics, that fit perfectly within their bug world. I loved these illustrations.This book is so much more than just a picture book and fun read out loud. There is a lot of content in this book, that makes for great think out loud discussions. This is definitely a must have for school libraries.

Wow! I am a grandmother now and have been collecting children's picture books for decades. This book is a masterpiece! The execution, words, pictures...I studied it over and over, and each time I read it, I found it to be more and more delightful.All ages would enjoy it: little ones for the illustrations, older folks for the clever use of language. I suspect English teachers in the elementary grades could use it as the basis for a llesson plan in linguistics.If you collect children's picture books for their artistic value as I do, and have only a shelf or two to display the best of the best, then this is a MUST purchase.

This is such a wonderful book for children (and adults)! We checked this out of the library and must have read it about 100 times so I knew we needed to own it. My children are 5 & 8 and they both love this book! It's fun to figure out what the insects are saying.

I bought this to share with my four year old niece. She was enthralled with the language, the story and the artwork. I loved the idea of the book when I somehow stumbled onto it while researching something else and couldn't wait until she was old enough to appreciate it. We read it more than once and she fell asleep talking about it with me. If you love sharing your love for books with young children this is one you must buy!

Amazing art! Gave me insight to how my non English speakers feel when I read in English. This is such a fun book I've read it a couple of times out loud to myself trying to understand bug language. Also gave it as a gift to my friend who teaches art. Buy it, you'll love it!

Personally I’m not a huge fan of this book and my kids did not really love it. We are voracious readers in our house and have many bedtime books including lots of non traditional titles. At the risk of upsetting fans of the book, I just found the whole thing a little pretentious. My kids just kind of shrugged. The illustrations were nice and my younger kid liked looking at the bugs. It’s an ok book but I don’t buy into all the hype and awards personally.

This is a cool book. The language is all made up so you can read the 'words' and have them be whatever story you want. There is a good flow to the made up language, sort of east-European, so it doesn't feel like some 'alien' language. My kids find this book a lot of fun as well.Probably not the best for early readers since it's all nonsense words!

This is the most beautiful book I am reading with my grandson (3). The invented language comes naturally to a child , it understands and remembers without having learnt. He is german speaking, and speaks now insect slang! - and admires with wonder these most beautifull drawings about the seasonal adoration of nature by its own creatures.

My boys (2 and 7) love this book! The illustrations are beautiful, and the boys love discovering new details on each page. The invented language is fun and promotes critical thinking--my 7-year-old has used good deductive reasoning skills to decode the language. The boys occasionally use lines and words from the book when talking to each other, too. It's probably not the best book for infrequent readers, but if you love books, I definitely recommend adding this one to your collection!

I don't know how I've lived 21 years without this book. It's absurdly beautiful and will move you beyond words. I first borrowed this from my library, but before I even got a page through I knew I'd have to buy a copy of my own to reread and study. It's definitely one of my favorite books. I'm honestly thinking about buying several copies to give to my friends and family so they have no excuse not to read it, it's that good. This should be required reading for everyone on Earth. If you're wondering whether or not to read it, I'll make a decision for you: DO IT. You won't regret it.

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. This reviewer remembers getting his first copy of the book in Boston during the early 1950's, when it was widely circulated among college students at the time, as well as young adults who were starting out in that decade. Knopf.Highly in demand it is always being printed, and has been translated into 40 languages.107 Pages long, it takes about 13 hours to read.The Prophet's main character is named Almustafa, the setting is he has been away from home 12 years and he is about to broad a ship to take him home, when he is stopped by a group of people, and he discusses topics that have to do with the human condition.Dealing with the rigors of love, marriage, children, giving, eating, drinking, work, joy, sorrow, houses, clothes, buying, selling, crime, punishment, laws, freedom, reason, passion, pain, friendship, talking, time, good, evil, prayer, self knowledge, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.I really like this book because reading it has enlightened me, even though it can be difficult to fully comprehend, this book is very thought provoking. I recommend this book to anyone interested in philosophy, poetry and classic literature.

My lifetime favorite. I was introduced to this book in the '70s and I have never turned it down since then. I've kept on going back again and again to its beautiful and poetic messages. This book is so timeless and so inspiring that I couldn't keep quoting and sharing Kahlil's words with my kids, relatives, coworkers and friends. This is a book that I intend to introduce even to my grandchildren someday.

Save your eyes and do not purchase this particular copy!! Seriously, the book is only 38 pages.... so let's use the tightest, smallest font possible!? That makes noooo sense.This copy Is more like a 'phamplet' and not so much a bound book. I do not even require reading glasss yet I seriously will never read this copy. Seriously, it's maybe an 8 point font.If you want my copy, let me know. Sooooo frustrating and ridiculous.

I purchased this book as a replacement to the one I had given away. This is one of my all-time favorite books and truly a classic. No matter what religion or belief you have, this book will apply and you will relate to it. This is one to read over and over during the course of your lifetime and to share with loved ones, and alsowith people that you just think may need to read it.

Just like last year's version and the year before that, it has increasingly outdated listings, as if it was just copied and pasted from 2017. Quite a few companies are no longer in business or have software/experience requirements that were relevant almost a decade ago.

May have been useful in the 90's but this is completely outdated, especially the art fair and festival section. Many better ways to find this info online

I bought this book and it's helpful in terms of naming companies, but the information about portfolio reviews and addresses isn't accurate! I bought the 2018 version and went to do a portfolio review right away (summer 2018). The address was wrong AND the portfolio review policy was incorrect even once I found the right address. Makes me lose trust in the whole book unfortunately.

I bought this as a gift for an artist and he said it's a very helpful book. Some of the advice is of the usual variety, but reminders never hurt.

As an illustrator, I have often used this book to send out promotional materials and contact potential clients. However, the publisher does not seem to update or purge irrelevant contact information. In the 2017 edition, there are listings of companies for whom I have worked that no longer exist. Many periodicals have changed hands in the past five years and are owned and published by different companies than those listed. With changes in the industry, some publications no longer use or commission art. There are an increasing number of entries with outdated addresses, so either it becomes a waste of postage or a waste of time (if dropping off). The contact information is not always complete, which may mean the listed company has not provided it, but why is that not a requirement to be listed? Some mail rooms will not deliver without a name, so the mailing gets returned-- another waste of time and postage.I tried to contact the publisher of this book, identified on Amazon as North Lights Books, but neither that publisher nor the title Artists' Market yields a contact email or address!To be valuable, this book (and its companions, Writers' Market and Photographers' Market) MUST be up-to-date; otherwise there is no additional value to purchasing the latest edition, if it is identical to a five-year-old copy! The publisher should make the effort for each edition to contact and update the companies listed, who should actively request a new listing, and the addresses and email addresses should be updated and accurate. There should be a specific contact person named, and that person should be the appropriate person to review art samples. For advertising agencies, this is rarely the CEO, for magazines, not the editor, for other companies, not the owner! There are art directors, art buyers, creative directors. These are the names the readers of this book need.Without doing all of this, Artists' Market becomes a relic, useless to the people who are paying for it.

I bought this book to try to learn some basic principles about designing my own exhaust system. As an RF engineer, the principles were very similar and I did get some good information out of this book. A lot of research went into this and unfortunately there is little solid information on the topic, otherwise. Conjecture on the other hand is easy to find.The problem is, this book is horribly outdated and presumably early 1900's English is hard to follow (the first book was published in 1962). I think most people would give the book 2 stars.When the data was being taken, there were no catalytic converters, no multi-valve cylinder heads, no variable valve timing, no oxygen sensors, etc. Each of these things has an effect on how a modern exhaust system should be designed.There also seems to be some contradictions. The reflections of the wave in the exhaust are caused by every perturbation, especially openings, like where two pipes join or a pipe expands into a muffler. The strongest effect comes from the very first opening, which is where the primary pipes join. This means that primary length is the single most important part of the exhaust system tuning. Yet they provide an equation that has nothing to do with the speed of the engine or how many cylinders are employed and later, they flat out state, that the primaries should be made 18" on a four cylinder engine and then the same for a six cylinder engine, without even using their calculation.Bottom line: If you try to design your own exhaust system using only this book, you will have a very hard time of it and will likely achieve very little improvement in performance over just running it any way that fits. On the other hand, if you try to design your own exhaust system without reading this book, you will have no chance at all of improving exhaust performance. It's your choice, but beware, it is a very hard read.

The info is dated, and the examples are European, so there's limited direct reference that can be made to North American cars. The theories are also dated. There's more directly North American info in David Vizard's SBC and BBC books, and in Vizard's "How to Build Horsepower". Still, this is a good reference book to have in the library.

Apparently this is standard reading for anyone interested in internal combustion technology, whether that is hot-rodders, motorcycle customizers, etc. Most of the information has been established for decades, but then IC engines have been around awhile, and there aren't many mysteries left. This is good, applicable information, that works just as well now as it did in the '50s. I found it informative, and came away with a better understanding of things such as exhaust reversion and scavenging, Helmholtz resonance, and all the other fun stuff involved in making an engine breathe properly.
