Murray L. Eiland Jr. has traveled extensively conducting field research and collecting rugs for study in the Middle and Far East. He is the author of Chinese and Exotic Rugs (1979). Pretty detailed but a little dated. Informative but you need to dig for that info. A little pedantic and too scholarly but still a book most people interested in collecting Oriental carpets will want to have.The above was my original review but I sat down and started to actually read the entire book. The section on dyes is worth the price of entry. The details are the point and worth reading through. The section on China is excellent - better then his 1979 book on Chinese and Exotic Rugs. A must have for anyone interested in Oriental rugs. The big five are this one, How to Read Islamic Carpets by Walter Denny, Oriental Carpets from the Tents, Cottages and Workshops of Asia by Jon Thompson, Oriental Rugs Today by Emmett Eiland, and Tribal Rugs by James Opie

Caveat: You won't know a thing about rugs until you start to shop around, until you start touching them. You'll have to look at the knots, at the foundation and the edges, and run your hands over the pile. You'll need to feel the difference between a silk weave and a wool weave. That said, this book gives a thorough informational grounding in the topic.The book starts with an account of what little is known of the origins of carpet making. The next chapter describes how carpets are constructed. Weavers make short knots that form the visible pile; the pile is woven on an invisible foundation of warps and wefts. There are many types of knots, and surprisingly many types of warps and wefts as well! The book then explains what materials are used--mostly wool, cotton, and silk--how they are spun into yarns, and how they are colored, with either natural or synthetic dyes. The colors are of course central to a carpet's designs, which is the topic of the following chapter.The authors then proceed to review the great carpet making regions. There's a huge chapter on Persian rugs, followed by a chapter on Turkish rugs. These are followed by shorter chapters on the rugs of the Caucasus, India & Pakistan, China, Turkestan, Tibet, North Africa, and the Balkans.Rugs are like wine, or like any fine object. One cannot learn the topic from a book, one must learn from the things themselves. A good book though is invaluable in reducing how long it will take to feel comfortable with the topic.One last word. There are 348 illustrations of extremely high quality, making the book itself a very beautiful object. It's a great coffee table book.Vincent Poirier, Tokyo

The authors are very comprehensive and knowledgeable. They have done their research and the reader gets an idea about the history, weaving and different types of Oriental rugs. A great read.

A definitive work!

Great reference book for anyone interested in carpets.

This is a beautiful book, but the coverage is overwhelmingly for geometric oriental rugs, with a large section added for Chinese. I was looking for the more ornate styles (Heriz, Tabriz, Sultanabad, and so on) that are so very beautiful. These are grossly underrepresented in this book, if at all (e.g., most are not). I am sorry I purchased the book.

While most of the reviewers praise the author, Urofsky, one must remember that this is the life of Louis Braindeis, and it is that life which is so absolutely fascinating! As one who taught management courses for 35 years and had a employee-management relations consulting firm for 40 (now retired), all of those issues and cases which began in the early 1900s and later became part and parcel of management practices were touched by the enormous mind of Louis D. Brandeis. He was a man for his times and beyond. He embraced "Scientific Management" before Frederick W. Taylor's lectures were in print (1911, compiled by Taylor's students). Though Scientific Management had its faults, it was the basis for social revolution in industry/business. Brandies was a man of and for his times, but his times spanned decades, and he understood how the country was being shaped.My take on the book will be different from almost all others, and is a very personal one. My father studied this and Brandeis' work in 1927 at NYU. Without knowing it, I started teaching both in 1966, and NOW I find the basis for how business (and politics) was conducted in the 20th Century. What a revelation! And what a mind Louis Brandeis had! He foretold the collapse of "banking" sixty years prior, and of the political shenanigans almost a hundred years prior. What a person he was, able to become what he became and how he still made time for his wife and children and with what must be considered a fortune, how he lived a rather subdued life in his spare time is a marvel. I think he may have been the greatest 20th Century legal mind and thinkers, brought to life by Urofsky. I wish - having come from Boston - that I had known so much more about his papers when I was growing up. On the other hand, my own papers and thoughts would have paled by comparison, and I would have known it. What Einstein was to physics, Brandeis was to law and social order.That the law firm that Brandeis started in 1890 still exists today (125 years later) in Boston as Nutter McClennen & Fish is truly remarkable. Few have left such a legacy. Certainly no president has.

This new biography of Justice Louis D. Brandeis (1856-1941) is the most extensive study we have of the Justice. It runs over 900 pages including extensive notes. Who better to undertake such a task than Professor Urofsky, who has edited 7 volumes of Brandeis letters, written several prior book-length studies of the Justice, and authored numerous articles discussing his activities. While there are a number of earlier biographies of the Justice, including the classic by Alpheus Mason ("Brandeis: A Free Man's Life" [1946]), this is by far the most extensive and thorough look we are likely to have of Brandeis and his life. The author does a nice job of balancing LDB's professional activities with his private life. Urofsky came to know the Justice's two daughters (now deceased) while working on the letters volumes with David Levy, and they shared family photographs and recollections of their father and mother with him. He also has had extensive contact with the surviving Brandeis grandchildren, as least one of whom like Urofsky is involved in the work of the Supreme Court Historical Society here in Washington.Urofsky focuses on several topics not extensively covered in the earlier biographies. First, the Justice's wife, Alice, much as Holmes' wife and Frankfurter's spouse, suffered from period of mental exhaustion which required treatment including hospitalization on occasion, although her condition improved substantially over time. Their relationship is essential to understanding the world in which LDB lived, and Urofsky's discussion puts this situation into proper context. The second area where Urofsky departs from previous biographies is his exhaustive discussion of LDB's Zionist activities. He is well qualified to address this aspect of LDB's life since he has written a history of American Zionism. Urofsky is nothing if not thorough, but I sometimes wondered if quite so much of this very long biography (I would estimate 15%-20%) needed to be devoted to LDB's Zionist activities. Other biographers have discussed his Zionist leadership, but in far less space; on the other hand, they did not have Urofksy's intimate knowledge of the history of American Zionism and Brandeis' role. There is no question that Zionism became a major, or the major, interest of LDB beginning in 1912 and continuing for the remainder of his life. So the attention Urofsky devotes to this aspect of the Justice's life is certainly merited. He has convinced me that you can't fully understand LDB without an awareness of this aspect of his life.While Urofsky is respectful of Brandeis, he recognizes some of the LDB's shortcoming as well. Was LDB perhaps "cold, haughty, disdainful"? He certainly had no sense of humor and was somewhat distant. Urofsky also questions Brandeis' own view that he had an internal ethical sense which would foreclose him from ever acting inappropriately, hence he could advise Presidents, subsidize Frankfurter's political activities, and act as "counsel to the situation" in a dispute on behalf of all parties. In short, this is quite a well "balanced" biography not hagiography. One of the most valuable aspects of the book is found in the 142 pages of endnotes--a treasure chest of research for those interested in probing further into the life of this fascinating Justice. The photographic research is also outstanding and adds to the impact of the text. The book is comprehensive--covering LDB from his early years in Kentucky through building his law practice, his period as the "People's Attorney," working with Woodrow Wilson, his tough confirmation battle, his 23 years on the Supreme Court, his leadership of American Zionism, and his warm family relationships. A most complete study of this most complex of individuals.

This unusual biography documents the life of a remarkable man who preferred to stay behind the scenes until his brilliance brought him to the attention of the press and Woodrow Wilson who, against much opposition, appointed him to the Supreme Court. He began as a lawyer serving a select group of clients in the Boston area--a job in which he began his lifetime search for "the facts," without which he claimed no case can be honestly settled for the good of all. His talent was not so much as a muckraker but as a visionary who saw that the attorney's role was not only to represent the cause of one client--often one in the wrong--but to study and understand the cause of both parties in litigation, and to find a solution based on facts that would in some way please all. In that he was an unique voice for civility and sanity. He saw himself as a counsel rather than an opponent, and thus was able to cause change if areas of conflict in civic life that seemed on the surface impossible to reconcile. He judged right and wrong from on high, and from a firm settle of ethical principles he had learned as a young man, a Jew in alien corn. To Brandeis the interests of all the citizens of the state and the nation were his prime concern. Not what was best for one special interest, but what was best for all. A deeply moral man who served his country most honorably. Not many of those around anymore!

Take much time to work through the questions and assignments that follow the day's readings; take time to read the references, and meditate on the teaching, letting the Holy Spirit lead you into all truth - and your thinking will be forever changed.This is one powerful book.

What a great book that explains several things in my life and helps me strive for passing on a spiritual legacy to my children. My father was a first generation Christian and my mother's family lost a lot of their inheritance because it wasn't passed forward or the house was found unoccupied. I highly recommend this book if you're looking to have your mind transformed more into the likeness of Christ and have something to pass onto your children. It really explained why I see God accelerating things with me and that the younger generation seems to "get it" at a much younger age.

THIS IS AWESOME! I cannot say how important this book is for EVERY SINGLE CHRISTIAN BELIEVER out there! It is worth the money and more and you will not be sorry! It teaches you what being a REAL Christian is about, makes you feel like you are on the cutting edge of New Testament Christianity that often feels like you are in the wrong spot from where a new revival is taking place. This is too amazing to go in depth on. If I could I would give EVERY single Christian in the world this book, because it has everything, it is FULL of revelatory information that explains things from prayer to the Holy Spirits work. It covers everything and everything has a fresh word! I don't care how long you have been a Christian or have built churches with your bare hands, THIS book is a MUST read for every Christian, old or new, I guarantee you will find fresh information in there! THIS IS WHAT THE EARLY CHURCH LIVED and this book is the beginning to getting the real church(the body of Christ) back to where it needs to be!

One of Bill Johnson's most powerful and supernatural power enabling books. It woke me up and helped change my thinking about what is available to anyone who surrenders to Christ Jesus and allows Him to transform their mind. I have become a warrior for Him,not just a believer in Him.

I am a born-again Christian. Have been - for over 30 years. Was a member of a non-denominational church for 26 of those 30 years. Sang in the choir, served wherever we felt led to serve. Hubby & I were part of a small group for many of those years. Our kids attended SS, youth group, vacation Bible school, summer camp, went on youth missions trips. After our daughter was married, I got to a point where I asked myself, is this all there is? THEN I READ THIS BOOK!! If you are tired of church as usual - listening to the same sermons re-cycled year after year, I URGE YOU to read this book, or any of Bill Johnson's books. If they stir your heart, as they did mine, check out Bethel church in Redding, CA. They have a podcast. If I lived on the other side of the country, I'd be at that church ASAP!

This was excellent. It had been recommended by my daughter-in-law and was well worth the price. Sent one to daughter who is struggliong with addiction and she said it was an encouragement and eye opening. My opinion is that everyone should read this.

I read the book "The Supernatural Power of the Transformed Mind" and was honestly transformed by the revelation and teaching in it along with revelation from the Holy Spirit. I highlighted so many passages with the intent that when I finished I would go back and pray and journal through them. I like to get the big picture first and then really dig in. When I saw this book available I was hoping that it would take it chapter by chapter, summarize and then ask questions and give journal prompts but couldn't really find out for sure in the description or other review. I bought it anyway and just hoped that it wouldn't be just like reading the original book. I am HIGHLY impressed already. There is a summarization of the key elements of the chapter and then really great questions that you need to work through. Bill Johnson gives scripture that gets you into the word and researching on the subject, asks you to chew on what is in that scripture (giving specific questions) and then also gives journal and meditation prompts. It is VERY thorough, he instructs on how to seek the Holy Spirit's truth and revelation while working on the book and the questions are far beyond surface and actually get you really seeking and searching and when you're doing that how can the Lord not show up?Bill Johnson is obviously gifted as a teacher and I am learning so much from his podcasts, book and now this devotional. I HIGHLY recommend it but definitely think it is a must to read the original book first. You won't be sorry.

We have read this book twice and plan on reading it again. It is so deep and insightful, one of the best books we've ever read.

As a 20 year old guy I found this series to be AMAZING! I rarely cry, but when I finally finished Darkstalker the latest (and best written) book in the series, I was shedding a waterfall of tears.I was looking for a book series about a world of dragons, without humans, written for adults and this is the closest thing I could find. Even though it only fit one of my criteria, I almost immediately fell in love with it.Never once has the author done something that made me think "That's impossible" as the author does a very good job of using science and logic to resolve conflicts in a way that never feels cheap. The worst I have thought is "that seems highly unlikely" only twice in the entire series. I wanted a series for adults so that there would be no Deus ex Machina's, but this series shows that even books for a younger audience can be just as well written as any books for adults.Also, although there are humans in this book series, they are NOT the dominant species and they are treated by dragons exactly as you would expect. This was very satisfying for me, as I have had enough of "dragon riding" books. I don't read dragon books for the humans, I read them for the DRAGONS!The only gripes I have with the series are entirely because of my age and the fact that I am not in the target demographic. First off, although the books can get quite violent, I would have enjoyed MORE violence. Especially from the main characters. However, I was satisfied by the fact that any violence in the series has a reason to be there, and is never meaningless.My other gripe is that I feel that, if the author was able to write such an amazing book series with so many tight restrictions on themes in order to make it for a younger audience, it makes me wonder just how much more deep and powerful her writing could get if she didn't have those restrictions.Overall, if you love dragons, buy this series. It has been an inspiration to me and I am sure it will be to you as well.

I've just started reading this series of books with my 8 year old, and she absolutely loves them. At this point, she could read them herself (they are listed as being for kids 8-12 years old), but she still enjoys having her bedtime read-out-loud stories, and I'm not going to argue with that. The books are engaging, easy to read, and very well written: the dragons talk and behave much like human tweens and teens, but their struggles and their adventures all take place in the fantasy world of Pyrrhia, where dragons are the main characters and humans are only mentioned in passing as "scavengers". I would highly recommend these books to any and all young readers with an interest in fantasy, and especially for dragon-lovers!

By all means, this series shouldn't have been half as good as it is. I came into this series expecting a watered down Harry Potter est story, based on the description in the sixth book, (the one I saw in the store.). But what I got was one of the best books I have read in almost a decade! It is so well put together and each of the dragonets shine exponentially in each of their respective books. And there are so many twist and turns you will never expect. And when past elements catch up with our heros, you really feel the impact and want to keep close attention to anything that happens. Because more often than not, it WILL come back in ways you will never expect. All in all, I cannot express how great fun I am that I gave this series a chance because there is no doubt it will stand the test of time!

I found this book at the local Books-a-million and started reading it, then got it on Kindle to finish it. It's a good, solid adventure book for young readers that I enjoyed as a 20 year old. The action is well written without being gory or disturbing, and ethical choices feel real and pressing. The characters are a bit simple but in a way that works very well for the story. My biggest complaint is that the protaginist changes every book. After spending a whole book getting to know one, I want to hear from them more. Despite that, this is a really good series and I'm looking forward to reading the ninth book when it comes out. I recommend this to friends in a heartbeat.

As I write this, my fourth-grade boy is devouring this book on a snow day, which makes me a happy parent.He just finished "The Land of Stories" and I thought I'd have him try out this series.For reference, he's a sporty, active kid and, for a long time, I had a hard time convincing him to read for pleasure. A couple of years ago, when he was 7, I managed to reel him in with graphic novels in the fantasy genre. He was surprised to realize that reading is fun! It looks like there are also graphic novels connected to this series. Since then, he's moved on to the traditional novel format (I think he graduated to Land of Stories after reading several graphic novel series).Personally, I'm happy to see the mainstreaming of fantasy. When I was a kid, books like this were considered "dorky" and I hid my interest in them rather than face ridicule from my peers. I'm beyond pleased that this is not the case anymore!

This is a book that is great not only for women over 40, 50, ... or 80 it is good for young women too and also for men that wants to know why women are sometimes the way they are, I learn so much about myself and about the opposite sex, it gives you guidance of what to expect from life, of course depending on how you treat yourself (body, mind and spirit), it also gives you the opportunity to understand that its never too late to start living a full life with no regrets. I always admire Jane Fonda as an actress but after reading this book I see her more as the friend that every women needs to have, someone that will be honest no matter what. I bought the kindle version of the book but also the audio book, this last one is my favorite is narrated by Jane Fonda herself and that fact makes the interaction so much personal. Highly recommended to anyone!!

Superb. Relevant, from sexuality to finances. A must for menopausal women and people in general over 50. Uplifting, encouraging, educational, well documented. It is just what I needed and changed the direction of my life. Some of the tapes skipped though.

I like this book better than "My LIfe so Far" by the same author. In Prime Time, Jane fonda prepares a manual for life that can be used to teach younger women about smart ways to approach their middle and and late years. There is none of the sensationalized storytelling that characterized My Life so Far. Instead, there are illustrative life stories taken from Fonda's life, which are followed by practical advice on money, love, sex, spirituality, etc. Well done.

This book was so wonderful! As a 62 year old woman sometimes you feel like giving up because you think the best has passed but Jane Fonda put so many questions to rest~I am now actually looking forward to the best time of my life!!!! Do yourself a favor and read or listen to this book because it will change your life for the better!!!!

Jane Fonda is one of my favorite people. I have read all her books. This book is very good for women who are over 50. It has lot's of valuable information that she gets from reliable sources and expresses it in an interesting way. It's helpful and a good read.

I loved this book when it came out and I still go back to reference it. Great advice and insight to prepare for my 3rd ACT . I most enjoyed and appreciated the "Life Review" guidance and Ms. Fonda's collection of memorable experience of people in their 3rd ACT.

Excellent, excellent, excellent! A well researched but down-to-earth conversation on aging and staying healthy. I look forward to putting some new things into practice!

Hard cover had been given to me and I expected to be disappointed and see a book filled with beauty tips. Surprised me with so much useful information about exactly what if says "vision for sucessful aging. A-Reluctantly accepted a copy of this as a hand-me-down and expected to see a book full of beauty tips. Surprised me. It's just as the blurb says "a vision for succesful aging. A-Z." It's so good that I bought a copy for my friend. Most importantly it contains some simple exercises to keep your body moving. Not everyone is able to participate in pilates or yoga. I suggest hard cover.
