...maybe especially for a skeptic, which I would consider myself. Having studied under Carl Sagan at Cornell and generally being firmly planted in the rational, I think only an approach like that of Wilbur's could get me entertaining some of the concepts I generally consider to be "out there." The reason is that he very inclusively maps a lot of belief sets and areas of science into an inclusive theory, that makes you know he heard your part of it, but points out there's more over in this other area (stage or quadrant or whatever). By being non-dismissive, he makes a more complete theory. I find myself applying the thinking in my daily life to things like evolutionary product design, organizational structure, etc.The downside for me was writing style. I found Wilbur hard to crack, and it took a month or so of time investment in reading several of his books simultaneously for me to start to get it. Before I got it, I found him complicated and tedious. After I began to understand the general framework, I started finding him a bit repetitive (more in other works than this shorter one). I think this could be a challenging read as an intro course, without either some prior Wilbur or a reasonable grounding in a range of other philosophy/psych reading. I'd recommend either reading Wilbur's History of Everything or maybe "The Essential Wilbur" with this.Nevertheless, this book is amazing, as is Wilbur, for his ability to synthesize so much information from so many fields of study into something so elegant.

An admirable attempt to show how all areas can be combined in one theory. The book is an interesting read. But accepting its conclusions depends on accepting its presuppositions, including that the spiritual realm exists as a separate reality. The theory is just complicated enough with grids, colors and levels to claim that critics have misunderstood the theory or the proper placement of some thought within the process. Do not expect any elegant E=MC2 here.

I bought this book because I'd read "A Brief History of Everything." In this book Wilber recaps the underlying theory of "History" and then gets into an overview of how to apply that theory to our world. Candidly, I expected more from this book. But, having read it I don't know what Wilber could have done beyond what he did in this book. What he did was give a brief (too brief) synopsis of how to apply the theory (four quadrant analysis/spiral of evolutionary development) using "integral thinking" to various areas of our civilization such as politics, business, education etc. All of what Wilber has written is fine as far as it goes but seemed to get bogged down in an effort to provide a comprehensive survey of how his theory could be applied to various areas of human endeavor. Perhaps the book would have benefited from a more complete and in depth explication of how the theory could be applied to one or two subject areas instead of inadequately summarizing a wide range incomplete applications. But, it's still well worth the read.

Regarding Ken Wilber's A Theory of Everything, and A Brief History of Everything. Wilber's books are very interesting, in his synthesis of latest thinking from all over the spectrum of knowledge--evolutionary biology, economics, psychology, history, physics, etc., to name a few--and his building a unified framework or world view that is profoundly inclusive of ideas from all of these fields. He is a "mapmaker" of sorts, an abstractionist and pattern-finder, plotting out how things relate in the various spheres of knowledge, and hanging them together in a single richly-textured fabric--of categories, structures, hierarchies and relationships. Everything from religion to evolution to particle physics are fit within the framework. I have some questions about the validity of some of the premises on which he hangs some of his notions, but the quadrant system he presents--and the common patterns he observes in all of these various spheres of knowledge--is quite amazing. It is interesting and thought provoking reading, if you are interested in a synthesis of the latest ideas on how "everything" hangs together (the "theory") and how it has come to be this way (the "history").

Unless a profligate producer is desperate to mount my play on the London boards, Claridge’s great scrambled eggs at breakfast and its tower of tea sandwiches in the afternoon are a thing of my past. Or were — last year Claridge’s published its first cookbook.Claridge’s opened in 1853. From the start, it was viewed as “an annex to Buckingham Palace,” and travelers who require 5-star comfort have followed Queen Victoria’s lead; unlike other venerable institutions, Claridge’s has little need for “marketing” or “branding.” Still, the cookbook is perhaps overdue. “It’s only taken 164 years, so we’re a bit slow with that,” says Chef Martyn Nail, which is just what you’d expect from a man who’s had the same employer for 30 years. He knows: Claridge’s is all about muffled drums, silent workers, a purposeful avoidance of visible change.Consider the very first recipe in the book: the croissant. It begins with a note: “This is a 3-day recipe.” The likelihood that you’ll slog your way through the multi-page instructions is nil. Beautifully done cookbook with easy to follow recipes-incredible photography and illustrations- for the advanced gourmet chef to an average home cooking enthusiast. Recipes include breakfasts, desserts, drinks, in addition to main courses.This is a coffee table sized book and would look tasteful (no pun intended) in any home setting. It's a bit too large and much too nice to hide on a bookshelf, not to mention your guests will love it as much as do you.Would make a wonderful gift for anyone interested in cooking (or Claridge's rich & fascinating history).Favourite recipe thus far is the Vanilla French Toast. Only Claridge's can make French Toast interesting!Definitely a must have for any cookbook collection.

I am really glad I bought this cookbook for my sister and one for myself! Claridges is a beautiful hotel and the food is impeccable. I'm delighted their scone recipe is included! They're sooo good!! Gorgeous quality book!

This is such a great book. The book is bigger than expected, but that quickly fades as you spend hours and hours reading and creating these dishes. Yes, some of them are a lot harder than others, but you are given an outline on how and when to best prepare them. There are plenty of easier recipes to try and the illustrations are gorgeous. This makes a great gift to a person that loves reading, and an even better gift to someone that loves cooking.

There is something about this book that draws you in even though most of the characters are self-centered and malicious and you tend not to like them. The current of love, lust, and possession runs throughout the story which is told to the new renter of "The Grange" by the housekeeper of Wuthering Heights. As she sits and knits she spins the tale of the tempestuous love story of Cathy and Heathcliff, slowly but surely you are pulled in to all the machinations that the Lintons and Earnshaws and the orphan Heathcliff engage in across the cold, damp, windswept moors of the Yorkshire estate. Your mind becomes filled with Heathcliff, always Heathcliff, watching planning and deeply in love with Cathy. The story follows their lives through two generations.As a reader, I have to wonder what state of mind Emily Bronte was in when she wrote the turbulent tale. Published in 1847 the story was considered lurid and shocking, but a masterpiece. It is Bronte's only novel and is as relevant today as it was back then. Emily Bronte had been ill for some time and died in December of 1848.

A timeless classic. I read this book a long time ago and decided to read it again. Enjoyed it even more as a more mature women. :-) It's a sad story that makes you feel sorry for many of the characters but it's a good escape back to a time and place so different from where we are now.

I enjoyed the book. I was surprised how our modern-day language has, apparently, been dumbed down over the years. I'm college-educated, but found many words she used to be ones I had never heard. That said, I still enjoyed the book. I probably should have read it years ago in some English class, but it was never required. I took my time with no looming deadlines and enjoyed it.

There are two reviews here, since this special version of the book has two things going on. When I was a kid I had some weird built-in prejudice against anything labeled "classic". Unknowingly I read "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" and even Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar," but I thought I had "discovered" them--had anyone told me they were classics, I wouldn't have read them. Stupid, but true. When I was in my thirties I read "A Tale of Two Cities" and re-thought my whole position on the classics--maybe there was a reason they were called that. So I read a lot of them, but I never read "Jane Eyre." I saw about four different movie versions of it, though, and figured I knew the story well enough. But when Writer's Digest announced this version, I saw a chance to correct an omission AND get some good writing advice. KM Weiland's book on structure, after all, is a masterpiece. Hence, this double-edged review.1. Jane Eyre. The movie versions I've seen were, surprisingly, fairly true to the book (not often the case, as anyone who reads a book and then watches its movie knows). Shy governess, obnoxious-but-philosophical middle aged guy. Crazy wife in the attic. Missionaries. They hit all the high points. But Bronte's prose is well-done, and her characters are far more complex than the movies. She has a great way of building suspense, too. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I wanted to see it happen, so I kept reading. And I was satisfied when I closed the book: a good story, well-told.2. The notes. Weiland's notes are, at the risk of sounding sycophantic, brilliant. Remember, these notes are about the writing of the book, not about the historicity or any of the other kinds of analysis you'd usually see in annotations. (My annotated "Sense and Sensibility" practically explains each curtsy as well as why dances lasted half an hour.) There's plenty of analysis, but it's all about how Bronte tells the story. For readers of Weiland's "Structuring Your Novel," it's like a Part II, showing the First Plot Point, (p118), Midpoint (p216), Third Plot Point (p325), Resolution and Epilogue. There are even pages at the back with questions (and lines for answering them or writing other notes) about structure. But wait, there's more! There are notes on perspective, voice, POV, conflict and tension, obstacles, character development, transitions, and way more than that. (I'm laundry listing here--but trust me, the notes could practically be their own book.)I'm a writer myself, though you won't see my name in Amazon in that capacity--I ghost write. Under my own name, I'm also a freelance editor (developmental, substantive, and copy--you name it, I do it) and have been one for years. But I still read books on writing all the time. Some I love, some I tolerate, and a few I've ridiculed (after jumping up and down on their tattered remains). But this book is its own category, or perhaps it defies category. It's a writing master class, analyzing a masterpiece of English literature to make its key points. If I were a writing teacher, this would be required reading for my classroom.One thing alone keeps the book from getting the fifth star, and it's a mechanical thing, nothing against Bronte or Weiland. They did their jobs well! But the typeface for the story is a serif font, and it's ten points at most, maybe eight. I needed to buy a +2 set of "cheaters" to read the story alone--and the notes are worse. They're a pale blue sans serif (the contrasting serif/sans serif fonts are good; the size is not and the pale color is not) that was hard to read even with the +2 cheaters. The notes are in the outer margins and take up about a third (one column) of each page. I wish they'd gone for broke and instead of giving us a six-by-nine (I'm eyeballing it, so the measurements are probably not exact), gone up a couple of sizes, just for the sake of those of us who are over 40. Then maybe they could've made the print a decent size.

Read the description. This is an 8.5 × 11 monstrosity that is masquerading as a "paperback". Ridiculous. I mean, sure, shame on me for not reading a description, but when most people say paperback, they don't mean a students textbook. Sheesh.

This old classic is a classic for a reason. IF I read it in high school I don't remember it. So I enjoyed a delightful read over several days, savouring the descriptions, enjoying the character development as well as the plot. At first I thought it was a children's book, but after reading it, I think the children of today would have a hard time understanding many of the beautiful uses of the English language that Charlotte Bronte perfected.

I wanted a cute, classic looking cover for my book case not a middle school looking one. Very dissatisfied. Will be returning asap

The Duke's Falling Angel was Enchanting!! I felt so many different emotions reading this very well crafted story. The author gives and accurate portrayal of the Georgian Era. Delightful and Lovable H/H.Drake Chadwick the Duke of Ravenscar has opened his newly built Chadwick theater. He is hired a famous French To Dancing Ballerina to open the new theater. But when she doesn't show up but instead sends her understudy. The Duke is furious and doubtful until he sees the Britannia/Bria Le Clair dance. She is Amazing her talent as a toe dance is off the charts.Bria finds out when her parents died that she was really a foundling. She finds a box with her named engraved on it. Inside was a necklace with a miniature portrait of a beautiful lady and a handkerchief with King Georges Royal initials and signa stitched on it and a small pouch of money. This leads Bria to believe she is not French but British but who is she? The Le Clair's that raised her have died and left her alone at age 14. There nephew inherits there everything. He immediately tells Bria to leave as she is not blood kin. Bria makes her way to a Ballet school to study.At 19, 5 years later she is now the lead in The Duke of Ravenscar's Ballet. The two meet and there is an instant attraction. But proprieties must be kept. She is a lowly founding Ballerina? and he is a Duke 7th in line to the Crown.Bria starts and investigation into her identity. She looks a lot like the lady in the miniature portrait. Then the accidents start to happen and notes threating her start to arrive. Once Drake the Duke of Ravenscar figures out someone is trying to kill her he makes her tell him why.They soon figure who Bria is an what happen to her. But the villain was easily identified. Bria and Drake do get there HEA . My only complaint is the villain's of the story didn't get there proper end. They deserved to suffer just like they made and innocent child and young lady suffer. This was the only disappointment in the story. The passion and love that Drake and Bria have is beautifully written. I loved the kind and compassion that they both had in common. What a Lovely Couple. I hope to see them again.

Drake Chadwick, the Duke of Ravenscar, must make his theatre – Chadwicks – a success, otherwise he will be in big trouble. When he learns that the star ballerina he hired is not coming to London, he is livid. However upon seeing the understudy dance, he is enchanted. Britannia – Bria – LeClair immediately dazzles everyone with her otherworldly talent, even if a tad scandalous. Drake is immediately smitten, but Bria will be no one’s mistress even though most dancers have no qualms about becoming rich men’s paramours. Bria also needs to take care of something of a personal nature, which would preclude any entanglement with a duke.What a joy to have a historical romance set against a background of ballet, particularly from an author who knows her topic intimately. The ballet sequences are breathtaking, described with precision while conveying an ethereal feeling of lightness and grace. The ballet world comes off as entirely genuine, and in addition to the author’s experience, her meticulous research gives the story much authenticity. The supporting cast of characters are well-drawn and frame the principals beautifully, and some of them absolutely wonderful. I liked that, in spite of his lust, Drake does not push Bria into anything, however in a way I could sense that he was patient, and was merely biding his time until Bria came to him willingly. I must admit that I never really warmed up to Drake: he is very dukish, judgemental, arrogant, and dare I say a snob; every inch the aristocrat. In a way, my problem stems from a fact that I never thought I would say, but Drake was maybe too realistically portrayed, until he did an about-turn that felt completely out of character, combined with other turns of events. I believed he was enamoured with Bria, but he would never have made their relationship official given his overall attitude; it goes against everything he is; she would have been relegated to the role of mistress, and nothing more.Amy Jarecki’s writing is positively amazing: flowing, smooth, refined; it is grandiose. The dialogues are also excellent, particularly between Drake and his mother, who is quite an extraordinary character as well. Towards the end, Ms. Jarecki also graces us with her trademark action sequences. THE DUKE’S FALLEN ANGEL is a breath of fresh air when it comes to historical romance because of its unusual and most welcome setting. I dare hope Pauline’s story is next!I give 3 ½ stars

Wonderful and beautiful! I have read many of Amy Jarecki’s books, and this is her first venture into Regency/Georgian period. I have loved her other books and looked forward to reading this one. What a wonderful story! I fell in love with the characters and the storyline. There is everything in this book, romance, mystery, intrigue! Would I recommend this, absolutely! This was a great Cinderella story! The Duke of Ravenscar (Drake) has put everything into his new venture the Chadwick Theater. When the Duke finds out the ballerina is the understudy and not the famous ballerina he was supposed to have perform, he will lose his fortune. When the Duke sees Britannia dance he is spell bound. Britannia being a foundling is determined to make her debut a success as this is finally her chance to prove herself and maybe find out some information about her birth. Neither can keep their eyes off each other but both know that they have to as they are from very different classes. Mysterious things keep happening to Britannia and Drake is there to help.
