I've been wracking my brain for the past day or so, struggling to find the best way to articulate my thoughts on "The Elven." I've found little success: "The Elven" somehow manages to tell a story both both familiar and refreshing. It can often be difficult to fully express the quality of a novel--the adjectives that come most easily seldom confer nearly so much meaning as they ought to.I first discovered "The Elven" entirely by happenstance. I was aching for a good book to read, and the discounted price on Amazon--along with the discounted price of the eBook--convinced me to give Hennen's story a shot, even though it had only one user review on Amazon.com. Cursory research revealed the Bernhard Hennen is a fairly prolific Fantasy author in German, whose works have been translated into many different languages. This unfortunately-titled novel, "The Elven," is (more unfortunately) the first of his stories to be translated in English. Hennen has approximately 17 books available on Kindle on Amazon.de, all of which are rated very highly--the majority scoring a 4.5/5 review average (including "The Elven," which has reviews from more than 400 users). The reviews for the "Elven" series were particularly glowing. I took the liberty of translating a bit from the two most helpful German reviews:The most helpful positive review, by "Martin H." (5/5) declares the book to be harmonious, fascinating, thrilling, sad and vivid. The first three novels form a trilogy of sorts, but each stands alone as a complete story. He states, "The world and characters are vividly and lovingly described so that the reader is immediately immersed into the world of the Elfs. Everything is written with a great deal of detail that never feels too wordy or fails to hold the readers attention." He also states that the story manages at times to be dramatic or melancholy without ever feeling contrived or cheesy.Conversely, the most helpful critical review, by "Media-Mania" (3/5) declares the book to be a very good read, but "brutally" short. This first novel is a complex book that tells a "marvelously intense story," with a great deal of suspense, action, mystery and magic, as well as a great deal of humor. He/she/they declare it to be "A true adventure story and a master work." Possibly even a little sublime. The Elven is very much written directly in the mold of the old Norse sagas. At first glance, that may seem to be a mark against the novel. After all, is there any setting more cliched in fantasy than the Norse-inspired mythic realm? Elves, Dwarves, Trolls and lots of hearty men with stout Scandinavian names, epic beards, and double-headed axes?But where most Fantasy authors conjure their settings through the lens of Tolkien (whose own work was a lens through which to view the old Sagas), Hennen ignores Tolkien and emulates the source itself. So, despite the many similiarities to Tolkien's masterpiece, "The Elven" feels more like a parallel work than a derivative one.I guess my "review" is getting pretty long, huh? I'm sorry about that. I really want to "sell" this book to everyone out there, but at the same time I don't want to rob any enjoyment of the story by spoiling anything, no matter how minor. The story of "The Elven" has humor, but treats its plot and characters seriously--with respect. The central conceit of the novel is lifted directly from some of my favorite myths and fairytales. To get from one point or another, the characters travel by means of magical portals--portals which are not altogether reliable, and have a bad habit of dumping our heroes out at their destination far later than they'd expect. This allows the story to be focused and personal, while still managing to fill out a truly epic, historical scale spanning centuries.And, covering entire generations as it does, the novel is able to constantly provide each scene--each moment--with genuine tension. Because people do die, and the world does change, and if there's one clear and obvious theme to Hennen's story, it's that everyone is at Time's mercy. In other words, it's impossible to be certain in the safety or success of any one character, because their trials and triumphs are presented at a historic scale. This transforms the "draw" of the story from seeing what the characters do to, instead, seeing why and how they do the things they do.What makes the story of "The Elven" truly memorable is the pacing. The "time travel" conceit allows the tale to be neatly divided into small chunks--each like a self-contained story that is connected to both the preceding and succeeding tales, but also enthralling in its own right. Rather than a single novel, "The Elven" feels like a collection of heroic stories tied together more by the characters involved than the machinations of the overreaching plot. None of the scenes feel wasted, and nothing at all feels superfluous (which, I now realize, is praise I can confer upon preceious few books, fiction or otherwise). The prose itself is--and I cannot stress this enough--magnificent.I wish I could discuss the quality of the translation, and maybe someday in the future I will. What I can say, having learned German myself solely to read Herman Hesse's stories in their original tongue, is that translating German to English is a very difficult task. And while I cannot yet comment on the accuracy of Edwin Miles' translation, I CAN comment on its overall quality. The prose... is simply fantastic. The writing conveys action, humor and beauty quite deftly. So deftly that, if I did not know better, I would never have suspected this to be a translation at all. Miles clearly put sufficent effort into his translation to make it appear effortless. If more of Hennen's books are to be translated into English (and I very much hope they are), I hope they are translated even half so well.

This book tries to span too much time. It's very disjointed. You form very little attachment to the characters at all.I really don't understand all the positive reviews for this one. I'm about 400 or so pages into the 800 kindle pages. If you enjoy things like taking 2 pages to describe going up a tree to someone's house (boring, wasted words), then you'll love this book. These types of things are all over.

I would have preferred to have given this a 5 star, but I was so let down by the ending, I just could not do it. The whole book had me mesmerized, so involved. This book was truly a piece of literary art, I couldn't put it down to do anything so mundane such as cleaning or making meals!!! And after all the work that was so obviously, so heartfelt put into it, it finished like a rush job to get rid if it and be done....I wanted to yell to Mr. Hennen=HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME???!!!!

I wasn't sure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. There is a lot of story in this book - it really is a saga. The author makes good use of the format in which he chooses to tell the story, and what could have seemed like a choppy or cheap artifice actually is quite smooth and keeps the reader tied in. I'm rather picky about the writing of the books that I enjoy, as well as the worlds and characters, and I have to say the writing in this is better than I expected, and though I did have criticisms at times, the fact that this is a translation into English really kind of negates that, in fact, this is something that one forgets almost immediately while reading. It really is quite well done.The story, and the world, is really very engaging, and while familiar to fantasy enthusiasts, especially those of the Celtic and/or Norse, it is an original and well developed take which really draws you in in a new way. That being said, I hated the ending - in the way that you only can if you've fallen for the story.Definitely recommended.

This novel starts off wonderfully. There's a monster, a chase, a rescue, a hunt and tragedy, comradeship, swords, axes and bows.And then, a story of fellowship, truth, growth and, adventure begins. While most would see this as almost a separate book, I found it to be an ingenious tale of consequences. Our three heroes focus solely on their goal to the exclusion of seeing the threads being weaved into a tapestry of chaos and destruction as a result of their, and another's, actions.Mr. Hennen has weaved an intricate epic of love, loss, and the evolution of a world and war. More importantly, in a time where most authors are writing series novels with cliffhanger endings, Mr. Hennen gives us a finished tale with hope for future adventures.

I'm not sure if it's just the transfer from reading relatively emotionless reads such as Sherlock Holmes, but The Elven is without question my new favorite book! It is a fantastic example of the fantasy genre and reads beautifully, despite being translated from German (something I was very concerned with before purchasing the book). If I didn't know better, I would have never be able to tell that it wasn't originally written in English!Be aware that this is definitely not a book for youngsters though! Many of the nouns I could see being quite difficult to tackle (some were difficult for me even) and there is a fair amount of violence throughout (not to mention one scene relatively early on that would definitely be viewed as inappropriate for younger readers).Nevertheless, the story kept me on my toes and had several twists and turns throughout. I bought the Kindle edition just for portability, but after I finished it I also bought the paperback as a trophy. A definite MUST READ for anyone who loves the fantasy genre! It has the elements we're familiar with in the fantasy realm but yet achieves a complete uniqueness that, in my opinion, outmatches many of its more famous cousins! Kudos Bernhard Hennen! You truly went above and beyond!

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AUTHORITY ON THE PERMANENT DIACONATEBishop W. Shawn McKnight was ordained a deacon on Nov. 27, 1993. Although he has since then been ordained a priest and bishop, he will remain a deacon forever. So it is with everypriest and bishop in the Church. Bishop McKnight's has taken a great interest in the restoration of the permanent diaconate as called for by the Second Vatican Council. "I spent three years in Rome studying sacramental theology, and I wrote a dissertation on the permanent diaconate under the guidance of Father James Puglisi, a Franciscan Friar of the Atonement and the director of the Ecumenical Center in Rome,"Bishop McKnight stated. "Ever since then, I have been engaged in many activities for the formation of permanent deacons and the promotion of diaconal ministry throughout the country," he said. The National Association of Diaconate Directors (NADD) has invited the bishop to give a keynote presentation at its 2018 Diaconate Congress this summer in New Orleans. The event will mark the 50th anniversary of the renewal of the Order of Diaconate as a permanent ordained ministry of the Catholic Church in the United States. His writing on various aspects of the diaconate has been published in the Deacon Reader and the Newman Review. He has spoken at assemblies of the NADD and the National Diaconate Institute for Continuing Education, as well as several diocesan and archdiocesan diaconate programs. He taught a course,"The Latin Rite Deacon," at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Ohio in 2005, and "Theology of the Deacon" for the St. Meinrad Permanent Deacon Formation Program in Indiana from 2005 to 2010. In his book,Understanding the Diaconate: Historical, Theological and Sociological Foundations he helps clarify the role of the deacon from the standpoint of several academic disciplines in the Church.

Bishop McKnight’s book is a challenging and profound work on the diaconate, looking at the historical and sociological aspects of the permanent diaconate as well as the theological and ecclesiological dimensions. He offers a perspective that should broaden and deepen the church’s understanding of the diaconate.Examining the biblical precedents and the theology as developed at Vatican II and in subsequent documents, using the insights of the social science, and analyzing the history, he lays out the challenge of understanding the charism of the diaconate.For Bishop McKnight, he presents a two-fold role for the deacon. The deacon is a social intermediary, working “to connect the people of God with their local leader, the bishop, and the church with the needs of the poor.” He is “a bridge-builder drawing church leaders, ordinary believers, and people on the margins loser together” (p. 254). He is also a symbol of communitas, the community which is the people of God, encouraging “the faithful to see each other in their shared humanity, more basic than all social roles and distinctions” (ibid.)Bishop Mc Knight sees the need to clarify who the deacon in and makes several important suggestions in the last few chapters.I was very pleased to see a careful approach that includes some caveats about the current state of the diaconate in the US, but always with the intent of opening up the full dimensions of the diaconate, not reducing the deacon to a mini-priest or a social worker.This book is not easy. It is a development of the authors’ dissertation. Thus it needs to be studied carefully. I see this could be useful in some parts of the formation and ongoing formation of deacons.There is much more that needs to be studied, including the role of the deacon in countries outside of Europe and North America and the possibility of women deacons. But this is a great start and provides a challenge to all who write on the diaconate.As a permanent deacon in Honduras, the first in my diocese, I found this a refreshing study to help me understand my ministry and to help the diaconate flourish in the church.

Bishop W. Shawn McKnight, in his book Understanding the Diaconate, presents a vision of ministry and service that should embolden Catholics as we chart a path forward for our Church in these difficult times. Beginning with the Scriptural and Patristic foundations for the diaconate, he examines the evolution of this ministry as the Church has evolved in our deepening understanding of Christ and his mission that we should go forth and be fishers of men. The deacon, as an extension of the bishop's ministry, can bring the bishop's guidance, compassion, and message to the faithful, even in dioceses that are stretched far and wide. At the same time, the deacon serves as the bishop's eyes and ears so that he can stay tuned to the needs of his flock.In unfolding the role of the deacon, Bishop McKnight also reveals his vision for leadership, which calls for the successors to the apostles to be among the people and sensitive to their needs so that he can address them with wisdom and empathy, but also true fidelity to the teachings of Christ and his Church.Understanding the Deaconate, written in a scholarly style, is not a quick and superficial read, but a challenge tantamount to reading other deep texts within the canon of our faith. In addition, he uses this background to discuss the issues (and some suggested solutions) of the modern diaconate. A few years ago I wrote my thesis for my MA in Theology on the identity of the modern deacon and I truly wish I had this book for that project!

This book is a good resource for those learning more about the Diaconate.

Hector A. Garcia, Psy.D., is the author of Alpha God: The Psychology of Religious Violence and Oppression. He is an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder in combat veterans. He has published extensively on evolutionary psychology, stress and politics in organizations, and the interplay between war and masculine identity.

Clinical psychologist Hector A Garcia makes use of evolutionary science to explain how our current political differences are rooted in our Stone Age mating. Makes the compelling argument throughout the book that our political preferences may be rooted in our genes. “An increasingly large body of research is finding a genetic component to our political natures.” “Overall, meta-analytic research suggests that 30–60 percent of the variance in our political preference is due to genetic factors.”6. Social science and the models that define our personalities. “Social scientists have developed various models for understanding human personality, the most widely researched of which is known as the “Big Five.” These dimensions include openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (or OCEAN).”7. Discusses differences between liberals and conservatives. “What the researchers found was that preschoolers who were rated as curious, impulsive, talkative, and so on reliably grew up to be liberals, whereas those who were described as shy, distrustful of others, compliant, and adult-seeking grew up to be conservatives. The ability of childhood personality traits to predict politics across such an impressive time span shows that genetic predispositions can influence our political orientations.”8. Fear of outside groups. “This momentous political event illustrates a highly consistent empirical finding—namely that conservative political ideology predicts prejudice against the outside group. As an example, there are a multitude of studies examining racial stereotypes of African Americans in the United States, asking questions like whether blacks are intelligent or unintelligent, or more or less prone to violence. In study after study, conservatives report more negative attitudes and racial stereotypes than liberals.”9. Describes conservatism. “Conservatism, I argue, is a male-centric strategy shaped significantly by the struggle for dominance in within-and-between group mate competitions, while liberalism is a female-centric strategy derived from the protracted demands of rearing human offspring, among other selective pressures.”10. Differences between males and females. “A large volume of research shows that females are generally more concerned with fairness, and males more concerned with dominance hierarchies.” “Conversely, there is evidence to suggest that less empathy among men has fitness benefits, aiding in male mate competition (which is often violent) and in facilitating killing in warfare.”11. Equality versus hierarchy. “A highly consistent empirical finding is that political liberals tend to favor wealth equalization, whereas conservatives tend to favor the economic status quo.”12. Interesting observations. “Thus one critical reason that male bonobos don't wage war on one another, why they can afford to be female oriented, egalitarian, and “liberal,” appears to be that their opulent food supply doesn't force violent competition.”13. Reproductive fitness and its impact. “And since men have more to gain from wealth in terms of reproductive fitness than women, men have a greater evolutionary incentive to prefer economic inequality. Thus the male-dominated, economically competitive orientation of political conservatism reflects a male reproductive strategy.”14. Endocrine system. “As it turns out, suppressing male mate competition is powerfully wired into our endocrine systems. Research has found that olfactory sensitivity to androstenone, a chemical related to testosterone, is related to a preference for social order and social hierarchies. This preference, moreover, is concentrated in those with conservative political ideologies.”15. The politics of sexual control. “Comstock laws endured well into the 1960s. Astonishingly, it was not until 1965 that the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for the government to prevent married couples from using birth control, and 1972 when the Court extended this protection to non-married couples.”16. Abortions and the Bible. “While religious convictions are often cited for antiabortion stances, the Bible does not comment on when a fetus achieves personhood, nor decree restrictions on abortion.”17. Germs and conservatism. Who knew? “Germs, in other words, fuel conservatism in women by multiple pathways—encouraging choice of higher-testosterone mates, giving disease-resistant males greater advantage in the mating market, and also by increasing monogamous sexual behavior.”18. The lessons of evolutionary science. “Evolutionary science suggests there is an important lesson to learn here—namely that much of the suffering that humans force on one another, whether oppression or genocide, can be attributed ultimately to male mate competition.”19. Technically speaking the only thing that gives me pause, is the concept of a male versus a female brain. I’ve read enough books to know that this is dangerous territory and given the opportunity I would love to ask the author if that is the case. Positive number 3 makes some reference to that.2. Lack of charts, supplementary material and a separate bibliography.3. Some repetition involved.4. Conservatives might claim a liberal bias.In summary, this is a very good book that examines the political divide based on evolutionary science. Garcia makes good use of science to back his points and provides a unique and welcomed perspective to this hot button issue. The concept of a male versus female brain, gives me some pause but I found Garcia’s conclusions to be reasonable and fair. All said this a very interesting book to read. I had high hopes for this book but was greatly disappointed by the end of chapter 3. The author relies on male and female stereotypes to convince us that biological differences exist. This has been debunked and is bad science.

I read a review copy last week and couldn't stop turning the pages. It's is hard to describe the breadth and depth of this groundbreaking book but in a nutshell - It is time for we as humans to acknowledge our primate instincts and how they influence our decisions and political behavior. It is a simple idea, with wide-ranging implications. Instinct blindness makes us unaware of how much our primate nature influences us each day. From the more obvious behaviors like eating waaaay too much sugar and the obesity epidemic to the chest thumping sexual behavior of Donald Trump, to women who fawn over the shirtless dictator, Vladimir Putin - The more blind we are to our primate drives and instincts, the less we can make rational decisions in a world that is far bigger than the small troops and tribes of our ancestors. This comprehensive view of political behavior through the lens of evolved mating characteristics challenges the reader to apply the author's theories, which are well supported by numerous studies, in examining common, every day political behaviors of all of the actors including him/herself. If conservatives are the bearers of those genes which fashioned ancestral males into violent aggressive competitors for access to female reproductive opportunity and liberals the bearers of female genes which predispose empathy, compassion and sharing, then how did liberal males, like myself, evolve? The book raises endless questions.

Garcia's scholarship in psychology is apparent in his work, as he cites numerous other similar sources and makes many astute observations himself that--when illustrated in the text--seem to explain everything so obviously. This book really lives up to its sub-title.

This is a interlinear of both the Old and New Testament. The format is a three column grid with the KJV phrase/word in the first column, the Hebrew/Greek word in the middle column and the most common translation of the word in the third column. In the first column, the word of interest is "linked" to the Strong's dictionary which gives the Hebrew/Greek word and possible translations, how it is translated in the KJV and a numeric mapping to the root word if it is a derivative. I love the book because it is easy to use and fairly quick to navigate through. You can get to the word of interest and do the survey. I also took Hebrew and Greek in seminary and this is my "triage". If I want to go deeper, I can consult the front line lexicons and grammars. It is very usefule for the layman and maya enrich your Bible reading and stucy. I recommend it.

This is worth every penny and then some on Kindle. It is very simple to use and takes you immediately to the original word. This has been my singular best investment on Kindle for study. I am away from my other books many times and this volume on Kindle is my 'go to' volume for the definition of the original words. If you are uncertain, Buy It!
