The type remains tiny. You'll wind up needing a fistful of non-prescription anti-inflammatories to remedy the crick in your neck after following the flow charts. And on occasion you'll lower the book, stare at the New Yorker print that's certainly on your wall and think: He was merely a short-fingered vulgarian in 1988. And now he's the "leader" of the free world. Still, at least one last time you should revel in "My Kid Could Do That," David Halbfinger's letters to the editor and ads for the Puck Building ballroom, "still the greatest place to have a party" -- and now owned by the Kushners. Sigh.

I expected a volume of selected articles and instead found that this book is a history of the magazine. I guess it's fine for people who want to know what this or that editor said one day, or how a magazine is published, but it bored me to tears. I was hoping to read articles that made the magazine memorable, not stories of the day to day lives of authors and editors. Not my cup of tea.

Funny, funny. funny!

I have several piles of old SPY magazine back issues around my house, so I suppose I am part of the ideal audience for this book, "SPY: The Funny Years." It contains a generous sampling of classic SPY articles that I recognized, as well as a few that I missed from the first few issues when I guess it wasn't very available outside New York City. The book also features a detailed history of the magazine written by former editor George Kalogerakis with notes and commentary by co-founders Graydon Carter and Kurt Andersen.You ask, "why should I buy a big, sort of expensive book about a magazine from twenty years ago?" Well, first because this book is funny as hell. Two of the first pitches of SPY were "The New Yorker crossed with the National Enquirer and David Letterman", or "MAD Magazine for grown-ups", and those are pretty good descriptions. The famous article about the Bohemian Grove is reprinted here in full, as well as Paul Rudnick and Kurt Andersen's "The Irony Epidemic" (perhaps the quintessential SPY piece), and Joe Eszterhas' flame-thrower letter to Mike Ovitz (with annotations.) The best SPY articles produced belly-laughs and cool investigative journalism at the same time.The history of the magazine included in this volume might seem a little inside to those who aren't already fans, but if you read it you will learn why SPY was probably the most influential magazine of the last twenty years, certainly since the heyday of the National Lampoon. SPY was reviewing other reviewers before blogs were even thought of, and its brand of radical skepticism towards all things media has been ripped off by VH1, E!, and every other pop culture outfit you can name. Only SPY was smart. I think I got a post-graduate education of sorts from my reading of erudite pieces like the satiric explanation of post-modernism reprinted here. (SPY was the first place I had ever heard of post-modernism, which tells you either how smart it was or how sheltered I was at the time.) Each issue demanded a lot from the reader, which is probably why it wasn't long for this world. (In a just universe, SPY would still be going strong and be universally recognized for inventing "reality" entertainment, for good and ill.)Co-founders Carter and Andersen have gone on to become solid members of the media establishment (and some would say that "Vanity Fair" editor Carter has become what he once mocked.) Old issues of SPY are avidly sought after on eBay. And "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" try to emulate SPY, not realizing that the old magazine didn't have a political agenda: it made fun of everybody. This book is a valuable keepsake for admirers of the magazine and a good introduction for those who are yet unfamiliar but are curious about the legend. Man, I sure do miss it.

Maybe the days of funny print are over but if so this book tells the tale of the glory years when Spy mag ruled the world. Some of it is dated, sure, it was of its time, but as an avid reader when it was kicking this is a glorious journey back in time. Plus it looks great. A must for short fingered vulgarians everywhere.

The greatest magazine of my youth is reprised here in book form! Anyone familiar with how wonderful and fascinating Spy magazine was back in the late 1980's should read this one. Spy broke new ground in "funny" and "ballsy" in the pre-internet age of media. Quite funny and well worth the time, though anyone not familiar with Spy probably won't get much out of it.Highly recommended for former Spy readers!

I loved Spy. I remember one issue that had autopsy reports on Jim Croce and someone else, in tiny print, in the margins. This was an outstanding magazine, too far ahead of its time to succeed. Hell, it wouldn't succeed now; way too much narcissism today for anyone to find humor in it. This book is a great tribute to a great magazine.Did anyone ever win the prize for the errors on the cover?

I thought this book would be fascinating, but it's kinda of boring. SO unlike the original magazine. THere is a lot ofwriting, but the design is so thoughtful, pretending to be chic, it's rather hard to read. The type is so small. I couldn't get though it.

I read Jenkins's more significant book "Convergence Culture" and found this one a useful follow-up. I don't find any single, overarching point in Fans, Bloggers, and Gamers (as other reviewers pointed out, it's a collection of distinct essays spanning several years) but as I went along, I felt that I got a deeper understanding of some interesting topics in culture, and media. For instance, what drives people to reinterpret TV shows and movies through fan fiction? Do gamers take the violence in games seriously? How can media makers create better shows by involving their audiences?The politics around violence in video games are still active. So what Jenkins wrote about these games and Columbine massacre are worth reading, although I thought he was a bit defensive and didn't weight both sides' arguments fairly.

This is a collection of articles from Henry Jenkins, over the span of his career as a media academic. Some of the articles are good, others are less impressive, but overall he provides the reader some for thought about the evolution of pop culture studies and pop culture in general. This is a useful book for exploring some of what pop culture studies is about and providing some context as to how the academic study of pop culture has evolved as pop culture and technology have involved. It's limitation beyond the fact that it's a collection of articles, is that some of the material can already be found in the author's other works in a more comprehensive form.

This was a case of looking at the title rather then the book. I picked it up thinking it would be about games and blogging. It does talk about it but more in a study of participatory culture.The book is a compendium of Professor Jenkins articles through the years.It's not bad if you are studying this topic.The first chapter I didn't care about and in fact skipped it. But I should say that is me as I really don't care to read excerpts of an interview. In this case it was Matt Hill interviewing Jenkins.There were articles about the culture of Star Trek and the efforts of the Gay community to get a gay character on the show. Interesting if you hadn't heard about it but I had known about the effort and even remember some of the shows mentioned.There are articles about violence and video games especially after the Columbine affair. Jenkins made some rather valid points about the perception of violence and the fact that often overlooked is the amount of teenagers that play video games versus those that actually commit violence. The fact that the violence in Saving Private Ryan is ok but the fantasy sequence in Basketball Diaries is not. The notorious Grand Theft Auto 3 is mentioned as well. I found it interesting that he was ambushed by Phil Donahue in the manner of Fox News. As Jenkins mentioned Phil turned to the Dark Side of broadcasting.The final chapter involved and analysis of Buffy the Vampire Slayer between Jenkins and his son. It bored me but that is because this was not something I was expecting to read.Overall, it's not a bad book if you are into this type of study. It really didn't interest me overall. But, as I mentioned I was not expecting to read this type of topic.

For the price we expected a book that would be for the teen level reader. We bought it for our teenage son who loves dirt bike riding. At only 28 reading pages, this is a major rip-off. This book was written at the second or third grade level. Don't waste your money. I will be returning it!

This is one of the most creative and well thought out financial books I have ever read. Seriously. I have read too many unrelatable money books that gave me little useful information. This one doesn’t disappoint. Will recommend to all my friends!

Overall very interesting perspective on financial planning over the lifespan. Grammar needs a check and some concepts are not fully fleshed out; while this may have been the intent (keep it short and sweet) it does limit its utility in providing more than superficial understanding of finances.

Loved this book and it's content. Useful for any age. Highly recommend and hope to purchase extras for clients and office.

I'm not sure how Darryl did it....again! In this book he has found a way to communicate sound financial principals that are "age and stage" specific. So much so that after reading it I wondered if he had some secret portal through which he reviewed my current and past financial history!!!........both the stuff I should have done and didn't as well as where I got it right.My only critique might be the title: underage audiences are actually welcome! A person would do well to read this book at age 10 so they can be inspired and ready to act either immediately and for sure when they hit 18. If you want a gift that could make a life-long impact in the lives of those you care about, order a bunch so you can give and share liberally. I did.Thank you Darryl!

This book makes confusing topics extremely easy to understand. He puts difficult concepts into short easy to understand chapters.
