I bought this book as a gift for my fiance. It is really gorgeous leather, with a lot of useful references in the front and really nice layout on the written pages. It has a nice table of contents.Unfortunately, after he opened it the first time the binding cracked in the back and now the pages are separated from the spine in the back half.

It's important to keep track of your brewing if you want to improve, or if you want to be able to repeat your successes. Well, this is THE brew journal. I've been brewing for 9+ years and have used many things to keep track of my brew days. BeerSmith works great, but I want a hard copy for reference and something to track each step better. I've tried other logs, made spreadsheets, etc, but NONE of them are as helpful as this log. There are a bunch of great reference sheets and guides that help, even a section on hops with substitution suggestions and basic profiles to help with recipe formulation. The log sheets are very clean looking, with plenty space for all the details of the brew session. There are plenty pages for your entries, so this along with the FANTASTIC construction of the book will ensure you have it for many brew days. I definitely recommend you try it, as I can't see myself using anything else for my hard copies! I've already labeled the inside cover as "Log 1" as I know I'll be buying another when it's full.

Extremely useful, there are a few things I would have loved for this to include such as a strike temp equations, a slightly different layout for ingredients, a little more space on the brewing notes(aka extend the lines all the way across), brewhouse efficiency equations, and target SG. As well as some space for all of those. Maybe reducing the amount of space for Hop, yeast, and fermentation notes so as to include space for the calculations.

Best Father's Day gift ever.....My husband hasn't had the chance to "officially" begin writing, but was impressed with the layout of the journal. The creator of this journal was very thorough by including the conversion charts, beer color reference, glassware reference, ABV reference chart, hops chart, and yeast strains chart. Not to mention, lots, and lots of pages for actual brew notes. Like I indicated above, this is a very impressive journal.

I have been using a web based journal for my beer making journey for the past year. During my last batch of beer I started to think, “what if the web crashes, or the site goes down forever? When my kids get older, it would be nice for them to find a hand written journal if they decide to go on a beer breweing journey.” So I purchased this beer journal. I love the craftsmanship of the journal and the lay out so far. I have only been able to put one recipe in the journal for a batch that I’m planning to brew in 2 weeks. Well see if it does better than web based. But, as of right now, I love it.

I bought this as a gift for my husband for Father's Day (from our kids to him). When I initially opened it up I was blown away by the quality of the journal. I especially love how all the reference charts were made available right there. He loved his gift, can't wait to use it.

I chose this journal over the others available for a couple reasons. This one is more expensive but I really like the layout of the recipe pages more than the others. It has a professional look and organized layout. The others didn’t grab my attention or didn’t have any pictures of their’s at all. The “leather” is very nice and has a good real feel to it. The charts in the front are nice to have as a fast reference. If you take you homebrewing seriously then why not get a nice one to keep your recipes? If you ever show anyone it’s a nice presentation. Ty?

Knowing that I had just published a military thriller in which North Korea crashes the electrical grid for the greater DC area, my brother-in-law sent me a link to David Sanger’s recent interview on NPR. Listening to Mr. Sanger confirmed some of the scariest parts of my own research. I discovered that my fictional scheme for robbing the U.S. government of electrical power is uncomfortably similar to an actual cyber attack that flat-lined large segments of the Ukrainian grid in 2015. Far from being worst-case imaginary scenarios, some of the concepts I’ve written about have already played out in the real world, usually in countries distant from the United States and under circumstances that either don’t make the news or don’t create an impression on the public consciousness.I burned through this book in less than a day. The Perfect Weapon has the page-flipping intensity of the best techno-thriller novels, with the gravitas of meticulously-sourced nonfiction. If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be “terrifying.”With true stories from the cyber sabotage of the Democratic Campaign Committee to the penetration of the White House computer networks, this book is a wake-up call for our technology-dependent civilization. Russia and China have penetrated so deeply into the electronic systems that sustain the American economy that either country might be able to set us back two or three decades using cyber weapons. North Korea and Iran appear to be not far behind. What seems to be stopping them all is the equal or greater ability of the United States to do the same or worse to them—not to mention the chance we might reduce their countries to cinders with nuclear weapons. That's the message at the heart of David E. Sanger's chilling new book, The Perfect Weapon. "Great power competition—not terrorism—is now the primary focus on US national security," he writes. And that competition is increasingly playing out online.The US government has been slow on the uptake to acknowledge this threat. In 2007, the intelligence community's annual worldwide threat assessment delivered to Congress did not even include cyber weapons on the list. At that point, both Russia and China had been building their cyber capabilities for years. Now, of course, attitudes have changed. The United States Cyber Command, created in 2009, was upgraded only in 2018 into a Unified Combatant Command, one of ten in the US armed forces. Cyber Command is headquartered at Fort Meade, along with the National Security Agency, and is commanded by the agency's director. Together, NSA and Cyber Command house both our country's offensive and defensive cyber operations. Sanger explains that the two organizations work together uneasily. Their priorities are sometimes at cross-purposes.Excessive caution about the threat of cyber weaponsDavid Sanger is extraordinarily well-connected in Washington. He has been writing on foreign policy, globalization, nuclear proliferation, and the presidency for more than thirty years for the New York Times. He has been the paper's Chief Washington Correspondent since 2006. Throughout The Perfect Weapon, he cites one-on-one conversations with nearly all the major players in the drama he describes. And drama it is. This book details the bureaucratic turf wars, foot-dragging, incompetence, and excessive caution that has so often characterized America's inadequate response to the threat posed by cyber weapons.The dilemma Sanger describes is worrisome. "America's offensive cyber prowess has so outpaced our defense that officials hesitate to strike back," he writes. Although American companies and government are penetrated online thousands of times every day, the government has rarely spoken out to denounce those responsible. Partly, this is because it may take days, weeks, or even months to assemble definitive proof about who launched a given attack. But it's also because officials in the CIA, NSA, Pentagon, and White House are unwilling for our adversaries to gain any insight into how we obtained the information. Even when we know perfectly well who's responsible, they decline to speak out. Simply citing specific evidence could reveal the existence of American or Allied "implants" in their computer systems. Like many of the top former officials he interviewed, Sanger regards that reluctance to show our cards as an error."The US has only rarely activated cyber weapons"Unless the government can accuse an adversary in public, it's hampered from retaliating. The upshot is that the US has only rarely activated cyber weapons, so far as we know. (The most notable exceptions were the Stuxnet attack on Iran's nuclear production facilities in 2010, carried out jointly with Israel, and the attack on North Korea's launch systems that caused its missiles to explode or fall into the sea.) However, Russia has not hesitated to attack weaker nations, chiefly Ukraine and Estonia, as well as both the United States and Western Europe.As Sanger points out, there are ways, however inadequate, that the United States might combat a nuclear attack. There is always a warning, even if it's measured only in minutes. With cyber weapons, however, there is no warning. And "In almost every classified Pentagon scenario for how a future confrontation with Russia and China, even Iran and North Korea, might play out, the adversary's first strike against the United States would include a cyber barrage aimed at civilians." And the threat isn't limited to those four hostile countries. "A decade ago," Sanger notes, "there were three or four nations with effective cyber forces; now there are more than thirty." Clear concise narrative. One hears of attacks against the U.S. and companies all the time. The details about how the attacks were carried out are fascinating. The information about the west’s capabilities make you feel better.However it is clear that the general public does not realize the seriousness of the threat. And many in government—federal, state and local don’t understand either.It is obvious that we are at war. We need a program like Y2K to harden our networks. We need a 9/11 type commission to find out what happened in the 2016 election and we need to protect the upcoming midterms and beyond.The Russians were able to change voting totals in the Ukraine and shut down their electric grid.We need paper ballots. How hard would it be to build a touch screen machine that prints your ballot in human readable form with your selections clearly marked. You check it and feed it into the ocr scanner. Paper trail and you check it just like your atm or gasoline receipt.It would be hard for anyone to hack the voting machines.

This was the first book I have read by Mr. Sanger, and I regret to say, it will be my last. One naturally has high expectations from someone of his caliber, but, after reading the book, I'm frankly wondering what all the fuss is about. Much of the book is written as if it were intended for high school-level comprehension. So much of it is hashing over "old" news that anyone who regularly reads a newspaper would already know. He is also a real name dropper in the book - being sure to mention all the people he knows and interviewed for the book - almost as if he were trying to establish the credibility a first time author might seek, which seems totally unnecessary. He is of course a newspaper reporter, which is how the book is written, but the subject really screams out for hard hitting analysis, which is sorely lacking here. Mostly, it is a newspaper reporter reporting on the news. There is very little that is new here. There are other, recent books out on the subject which are far broader in scope and analysis, such as "Virtual Terror", which I found to be a far better and more valuable read. A shame Sanger didn't put his intellectual capacity into this book. Instead, it seems to be just another over-hyped, mass marketed, mass produced, ordinary book. A shame.

Terrific book!! Gives a point of view not really found often in literature: Women actually serving in war zones. Shows the original motivations, pre-9/11, of three very different women for signing up for the Indiana National guard. All served deployments in the middle East, and had a variety of experiences. Their stories are inspiring, heart-breaking, fascinating and horrifying, and brought home clearly to me that war is hell. These women are from different backgrounds and either enlisted originally for the extra money every month or the college tuition benefits or both. At the point of their enlistment, the U S National Guard troops had not been used in extended conflicts on a long term basis. 9/11 and the ensuing conflicts in the Middle East changed that. Helen Thorpe is a masterful author. I highly recommend this book.

Chilling look into the consequences of war in general and of women warriors in particular. While it is easy for the politicians to stand in front of the cameras and talk about how inspired they are by our troops and their sacrifice, it's entirely another to take respnsibility for the incalculable disruption and damage done to their lives and their families. As a society, we will be paying for these ill considered and poorly managed military actions for decades to come. This book is a disturbing peek under the hood of what happened on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq through the eyes of three women who did what most of cannot even imagine and would never attempt.

No matter how much I read or watch about this subject, I never feel that I understand more than the tiniest sliver about it. By profiling these women, Thorpe personalizes the experiences of serving in these wars in a compelling way. These three women are far from perfect but each tremendously likeable in her own way. The end is the most interesting part of the book—how each of them adjusted to life back in the States. Each of them had similar difficulties making the transition.When the combat ban on women was lifted, one of the women profiled, Desma, says that women have already been in combat, but maybe now they would be trained like the men, something that had been denied her.One of the women says, that she “realized they would all be counting, possibly for the rest of their lives, what the last decade had cost. What it had cost the people who had gone away (to Afghanistan and/or Iraq) and the people they left behind.”Thorpe briefly mentions the epic rates of alcoholism and depression and suicide of the returning soldiers. She never hits you over the head with anything but illustrates the damage done, as well as the positive things the women took from serving.

Helen Thorpe's second book. She continues her compelling personal journalism dive into the lives of American women caught in the endless war/economic inequality/cultural conflict that defines so many lives in America. This one about the women drawn into military service as an escape from poverty, only to be sucked down into a life- and family-destroying maelstrom of repeated deployment, lying recruiters and officers, and gender discrimination and harassment in the US military. And how their courage, determination and soulful friendships kept their heads above water -- somewhat.

This was an extremely moving book. Ms. Thorpe tells the story of three women in the Indiana National Guard who served in Afghanistan (and two of them also served in Iraq). They have to deal with the problems all of our soldiers have had with being pulled out of their normal lives at home and sent to fight in these two wars. In addition, they have to deal with the problems of dealing with being women in a traditionally male situation. Yes, they volunteered for their jobs. However, they didn't volunteer for the discrimination they faced. In addition to the problems all of our soldiers face, two of the women are mothers, which entails additional burdens, as they try to balance their life as a soldier with their lives as mothers and grandmothers. This book was very well written, and their stories fascinating.BTW, do not believe the negative review posted about the "lack of AK-47's in the US Military". Obviously, the reviewer has not read this book. The book clearly explains that the job of two of the women in the book was to clean and repair captured AK-47's that were then given to the local Afghanistan forces to use, due to their dependability.

this was a book club selection. it was not one i was looking forward to reading. i would highly recommend to any book club that enjoys philosophical, political, socio-economic, feminist, economic issues that have no black/white answers. this book has altered my thinking to some degree concerning my biases against the military and my snobbishness about peoples' life decisions. i am a west coast somewhat liberal thinker, and i really did need a new lens through which to view middle american situations and life styles.in terms of writing style, i am not a great literary judge. there were times when i thought there could have been a bit more editing, but by the time i finished the book, i felt that the details probably contributed to a more precise as well as holistic understanding of events and characters.

This is an excellent introduction to analyzing financial statements, at least for those who have never done so before or who have no background in business. If you plan on spending a lot of time doing indepth analysis of financial statements, I would recommend starting with this book to provide the basics and then moving on to a more technical and detailed volume. You might want to pick an accounting and/or finance course along the way, too.

Does not cover the material in a clear and concise manner, very slow at times. Would look at other options, could not sit through the whole lecture. I am an accountant and even enjoy this type of material.

I found this book to be really beneficial. Though I have no weight issues and never have, I love cakes and desserts and eat them daily. I sort of rely on them for the afternoon pick me up. This started after I gave birth to my second kid. And I've sort of become a slave to the sugar craving. In addition to that I was recently diagnosed with a Thyroid Nodule. Although I don't have a thyroid condition, it's a swell/cyst or inflammation on my thyroid. For the first time in my life I became interested in improving my health. But I never believed I had a problem; I eat well, no soda, no sugar in coffee, no alcohol, no candy... And I work out 2-3x a week with an active life style. But my skin looks dull to me and I'm obsessed with pastries and doughnuts and cupcakes and chocolate (need I say more?). Did I really have a problem? I read the book and after each chapter was really impressed with all the knowledge I was gaining on food and ingredients and their effects on the body. I'd wake up each morning ready to start the 3 day detox.... But couldn't make it past breakfast. Finally halfway through the book and after a previous day of classic sugar overdose at a birthday party I started the day 1 detox. Worst day of my life. By day 2 I was certain this was the stupidest decision of my life. But I followed the detox plan exactly. By day 3 I was craving anything yummy or sweet like crazy, I felt starved and deprived... But I made it through. I couldn't go back, I had come so far. I had to prove to myself I could do 3 days, just 3 days! And by the morning of day 4 (and after pooping a five gallon bucket worth of pooh) I had lost 4 lbs and felt amazing. I was a believer, not from the weight loss, but from the sheer amount of stuff coming out the back end (if you know what I mean) despite putting so little in. I never had a low energy point in the afternoons despite just eating veggies, protein and nuts. So I continues with week 1 (and was overly excited about the diet additions like apple and dairy). I'm now at the end of week 1 and still have the occasional sugar craving, but despite sugar being everywhere I refuse to put it in my body - that's an iron will that has now stood the test over a dozen times through out this week. I'm about to start week 2 and am impressed that I've come this far. I couldn't have ever done a diet without the incredible information in this book. It has transformed how I look at food, health and my body. I'm glad to have kicked the habit and now have control and choice in the matter.

My 3 stars are for the digital version, not the content of the book. I ordered it digitally so that I could start the program right away but wish I had ordered the hard copy. The digital version is too hard to navigate and flip to referenced sections easily (more internal links would be helpful, such as for the many items with asterisks). The Kindle app on my Mac laptop doesn't allow a print option for me to print out the suggested weekly menus or the recipes for easy reference in the kitchen. (I've gotten around that by taking screen shots and then printing them, but many recipes are broken up on multiple pages so it's a pain.)The book itself seems arranged oddly and info is repeated in different sections. (I'm a writer/editor and I would've arranged it differently for a better user experience.)So far, I am enjoying the detox itself - only on day 5 so far. Many of the foods are ones that I was eating anyway, but I was eating larger portions and eating a lot of sweets laying around the office and "power bars" as snacks, which often contain a lot of sugar. I wish the book had a section discussing hypoglycemia - which I have and it requires me to have a protein snack every two hours to keep my blood sugar from getting too low. Advice on how to make-ahead and pack food for long days at work would be helpful also.

I just finished the 31 day program and I've lost 10 lbs!!! My husband decided to try it after my great results. He has lost 12 lbs and he's only on week 2. Both of my parents are type 2 diabetic and are going to get approval from their doctors to start ASAP! The first three days are tough, but it gets easier. I plan on sticking with this lifestyle change to feel this healthy for as long as possible!!

I love this book. I am looking to lower or completely eliminate sugar in my diet. This looked to be one of the simplest ways of getting started. Simply written,easy to understand and easy to follow. I can't say positive work has happened as a result because I haven't started it yet. I read the Kindle addition from end to end. There are many many references to other pages which does not lend itself to the Kindle user. My suggestion is if the sample interested you, get the paperback copy. I ordered my copy yesterday.

The book is very easy to follow with some wonderful recipes. I saw immediate results in just one week.

I was doing this detox without the book because it's easy to find online, but I bought the book because I wanted some fresh new recipes. There aren't that many recipes, and it's spread across the 4 weeks of the detox. I think it would have been better to focus on the earlier part of the detox, because that's where your diet is most limited. I can easily think of ways to incorporate dairy into my diet (which is allowed later) ;)

Lost weight and feel great! Highly recommend as a great way of life! Had issues with joint pain and mental fog prior to beginning the process, and now that's all gone! It's incredible, even coming from a a former sweetholic!!

My husband and I did this together. The plan is very well laid out and the increase in good carbs each week makes this plan one that feels so decadent. My husband lost 70lbs on this method and loved the foods allowed! I lost weight, but my body has a hard time recovering from the "keto flu" type symptoms and I may need to try again but start at week 2 or 3. Overall though, we both like it and recommend it to friends.

I had started to make hand made tiles before finding this book. On one hand the book confirmed a couple of things I was doing that were right, but more importantly the book provided tips and techniques that I had thought of yet. After going through the book I went back with increased confidence that I could make better tiles. Recommend this to other clay people that haven't tried making and decorating tiles.

This is a good book to inspire designs but it's fairly light for detailed information on things beyond basic design. Handmade Tiles: Designing, Making, Decorating is a much better book for overall tile making information. That having been said, it will be a part of the bookshelf.

A beautiful book with lots of projects. I have several books on tile and this is my favourite. The picyures alone are worth the price of the book.

very thorough directions though have not had time to try them out. I find many of these books at libraries and find I have to have them. It is hard to buy books without seeing them. I recommend this.

This book is an awesome book for beginning and mid level tile makers. It offers numerous variations on how to approach an image via mosaic tiles. Very solid info provided, well written, great picutures.

the first 20 pages or so might be usable, but I wouldnt have purchased it if I had looked closer. i didnt really get any insight from reading it.

I loved this book! The author includes a very wide variety of tile designs and artisans -- many great images of tiles, and information about handmade tile. Highly recommend!

I am not the most avid reader. I like chapters and conclusions and plot lines that each have a purpose...or so I thought. The Dark Tower series has restored my faith that I can actually sit and enjoy reading a book simply for the joy of reading it. Not every character has to be essential, not every moment has to be epic. Some chapters are just a few words long. But I didn't ever notice.This is the first book I can remember just reading, not worrying how long it is or how much I have read. It can go on and on and I will continue to enjoy it. 7 volumes? The Dark Tower novels are quite different, and so is the story they tell. Its an odd setting because of the dual world view but it Could explain a lot of things that happen in our world. The story is told in a number of volumes and should be read from number one on. Starting in the middle will be confusing. The settings jump around a bit between New York and the "other world" locations, but that isn't difficult to understand, if you accept the premise of the dual worlds and that there are paths (doors) between them. The main character is Roland, the gunslinger, but he isn't the usual definition of "gunslinger" in our old west stories. He is more of a Paladin that tries to correct wrongs, but he is the last of his kind. He has an obsession with what he thinks is happening to his world and why it is falling apart. He is caught up in a riddle where he sees things happening that seem related but he does not yet know how or why. The story is his quest to find out and do something to stop his world from falling apart, if he can. He acquires a few companions on his trek. These people add flavor to the quest because they are from our world and their experiences in this world help him on the quest in his world. How is part of the charm of the story, and the twists that I think make the story and give it the body that makes a good yarn. Patience is required while reading this collection of novels because the story is Long. Mr. King's comments on this are in each book and help to explain why there are so many parts to the story.

It's my third time reading this series and they do bleed together somewhat over time, but I believe this one is my favorite.The first book is great but this one just seems like, and is, a new beginning. I really hope that they find a way to include Eddie and Susannah in the cinematic version of the story down the road as they are both fantastic characters, perhaps the best in the series.

This is the 2nd book of the 7 book Series "The Dark Tower".Spoilers AheadThe Gunslinger wakes up on a beach where he is attacked by monsters and is wounded. After this he walks the beach and discovers doors to the World as we know it but at different points in Time. He enters the world thru these doors and meets people he needs to help him continue on his path to the Dark Tower. This is a good book in the series and the people that are brought into Roland's World make a good addition to his Ka-Tet.

After the first book I was really considering if I were to keep going or not. The characters in this story were the ones I was waiting on to help the story move along quicker. At this point I am now feeling connected to Roland, Eddie, and Susannah. I have to read the next one to find out how this world will change them.

The Dark Tower series is very well written, Stephen King, after all, but I pushed through the first book and just couldn't make it through this one. It's simply . . . dark. I don't mind creepy, gorey, scarey, psycho or completely 'out there'. But dark just doesn't do it for me. I admire Roland for all the hardships he suffers and keeps on going, but I just can't stay there with him. It's too exhausting for me.

Why twelve you ask? I have read this book a minimum of 12 times now. I will read it again. These books are my all time favorites and I pull them out again at the very most every other year. They never grow old and the pages can never be turned fast enough even though I know what happens next. The adventure is as good now (better mayhap) then it was the first time. Ka

The Dark Tower series really picks up here, in the second novel. "The Drawing of the Three" is longer than "The Gunslinger" and also quite a bit superior to it in many ways.This is where the boundaries between the worlds are crossed, and we see Roland actually going into different time periods of Earth to retrieve several special individuals. There is a lot more characterization this time around, with several major characters other than Roland, and thankfully, Jake is nowhere in sight.We get to see more of the steller cosmic worldbuilding, as Roland comes across doors which allow him to jump into the head of a person living in another time and place, and even control them. I enjoyed the first section, "The Prisoner" quite a bit, though I found the second section, "The Lady of Shadows" rather boring and a waste of time. Things really picked up in "The Pusher", which had both excellent storytelling, lots of excitement, and quite a bit of humor. (Particularly Roland's interactions with the police officers and drug store clerks.)The idea of the traveling between worlds was particularly interesting, even though it is pretty much restricted to just Earth in different time periods. Of course, I could have used less Detta Walker.I'm reading the third book right now, and up to this point this second novel remains my favorite in the series, so far.The Dark Tower series is an epic, with excellent characterization, worldbuilding, and originality, and especially interesting details regarding the multiverse it is set in. It blends many genres succesfully, including fantasy, western, science fiction, and elements of horror.4.5 stars.

A marvelous read. Not the usual King fare. But With all the skill and mastery Of king, the story craftsmen. Blending elements of horror, fantasy, the old west, and dystopian faraway times, King has woven a continuous yarn here that takes the reader on a journey that once begun must be completed. Highly entertaining. King weaves worlds and sets atmospheres that culminate here. I can't wait to read the next book.
